16th Avenue Markham sewer construction affects YRT service "this fall"

Update — Friday, April 1, 2022, 4:57 p.m.: Construction blocks YRT bus access to stop #2997, on 16th Avenue at Heritage Corners Lane, starting Monday, April 4.

Update — Tuesday, March 8, 2022, 8:16 a.m.: Starting 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, the Region is temporarily closing the westbound lanes of 16th between Ninth Line and Highway 48 / Markham Road from 9 p.m. Sunday-to-Thursday evenings until 5:30 a.m. Monday-to-Friday mornings. YRT is detouring buses until May 10 (5:30 a.m.).

York Region contractors are rehabilitating a 1.5-kilometre section of the York Durham Sewage System that extends under

  • 16th Avenue (Regional Road 73) between Ninth Line and west of Mingay Avenue

in the City of Markham.

The project includes:

  • installing a temporary sewage bypass pipe;
  • rehabilitating two access shafts;
  • relining the trunk sewer; and
  • other work.

Expect construction-related noise from construction equipment. Contractors will install sound barriers around around the compound sites to reduce the effect of the noise. Periodically crews work overnight and weekends.

16th Avenue remains open to traffic; periodically, the work zone may restrict traffic lanes. Traffic-control personnel will be on-site to help direct traffic.

Crews completed Phase 1 of the project between Ninth and west of Williamson Road in 2019. “This fall” (perhaps as early as Monday, September 20), crews start phase 2 of the project between west of Williamson and west of Mingay.

YRT passengers aboard buses along these routes can expect delays:

  • 16 16th Avenue; and
  • 410 Markham high-school special via Carlton.

Occasionally, the work zone may block bus stops.

Sewer construction on this part of 16th Avenue and the resulting YRT service changes continue “until Fall 2023”, meaning as late as November 30, 2023.
