College Station "Easier Access", second-exit projects: Overnight work, starting September 27

The TTC is continuing its “Easier Access” program to install elevators in its rapid-transit stations, making the subway system accessible for everyone. The program supports the government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The provincial legislation commits the TTC to achieving a barrier-free transit system by 2025.

It’s also building second exits from stations with just one exit to increase passenger safety during emergencies.

Since Monday, November 9, the TTC has been building a new station concourse south of the current concourse at College Station. The new concourse combines new elevators and a second exit through the College Park retail development.

Contractors have set up a work zone on Yonge Street south of College and Carlton Streets. Crews are completing the project in stages to reduce the impact on the local area, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

From 10 p.m. Monday, September 27 until 7 a.m. Tuesday, September 28 and continuing overnight nightly, crews start working on the foundation and structural support to make College Station safer. Crews work overnight Mondays to Fridays on the west sidewalk of Yonge to install structural supports for the new concourse at College Station. During this phase of the project, they:

  • remove sidewalk segments; and
  • install micro-piles (structural supports) in the sidewalk.

To complete this work, they use:

  • a small drill rig with an air compressor to drive air through the drill rig; and
  • a mini-excavator to remove the sidewalk segments.

Expect noise. The trailer site at #21 Granby Street will be active overnight to provide washrooms and break rooms for workers. The work zone blocks the west sidewalk while crews carry out this phase of the project. The east sidewalk remains accessible.

Overnight construction for the “Easier Access” and second-exit projects at College Station continues until October 8 (7 a.m.).
