Tuesday, May 25, the City of Hamilton started construction on its Central Neighbourhood upgrades project in downtown Hamilton. Construction continues “until December 2021”, meaning as late as until December 31.
During this project, the City is:
- replacing the water main and sewers;
- rebuilding roads and sidewalks;
- resurfacing roads; and
- improving intersections.
From 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, December 2, the City is closing
- the intersection of MacNab Street North with Mulberry Street,
while crews pave the roadways during the next phase of this project.
Construction crews maintain local access on MacNab North and Mulberry, but the work zone blocks through traffic.
The Hamilton Street Railway is detouring buses along this route, while the streets are closed:
- 4 Bayfront.
Construction at MacNab North / Mulberry and the resulting HSR detour continue until July 6.
The City previously closed the intersection of MacNab North / Mulberry during the first phase of this project from Thursday, May 27 until Thursday, July 6.
It also closed:
- James Street North between Cannon and Barton Streets from Monday, August 16 until Monday, August 30;
- Bay Street North between Cannon and Barton Streets West; and
- Barton Street West between Bay and James Streets North.

Inbound buses operate along their regular route.
From 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, December 2, outbound buses operate along their regular route to York Boulevard and MacNab Street North, then detour:
eastward along York and Wilson Street;
northward along John Street North; and then
westward along Barton Street East; and then
northward along James Street North to Murray Street,
resuming their regular route northward along James North.Outbound buses skip their regular stops
- on MacNab Street North beyond York Boulevard, at Cannon Street West, beyond Mulberry Street and at Colbourne Street and Murray Street West.
Instead, outbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops
- on York Boulevard across from MacNab Street North,
- on James Street North beyond Cannon Street East and Robert Street and
- on Barton Street East at Hughson Street North.
