The 108th annual Grey Cup Festival takes place in Hamilton this weekend. The highlight of the event, of course, is the Canadian Football League championship game between the hometown Hamilton Tiger Cats and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Sunday, December 12 at Tim Hortons Field.
Game-day events include a pre-game show at 4 p.m. with game kickoff at 6 p.m.
Burlington Transit, GO Transit and the Hamilton Street Railway are offering fans extra service to get to and from the events.
Passengers requiring specialized services to travel can book rides aboard DARTS (Disabled Accessible Regional Transit Service), including connections with Burlington Handi-Van and Niagara Specialized Transit.
The event affects service along these routes and lines:
- Burlington Transit — 1 Plains - Fairview.
- GO Transit — 01 Lakeshore West, 09 Lakeshore East.
- Hamilton Street Railway — All routes, 2 Barton, 3 Cannon, Express buses:
- Black Line express;
- Gold Line express;
- Green Line express; and
- Red Line express.
Burlington Transit
1 Plains - Fairview
Burlington Transit is extending its service hours along the route from 10 p.m. until midnight for the Grey Cup.
To the game:
Buses drop off or pick up passengers every 15 minutes until 8 p.m. and then every 30 minutes from 8 p.m. If paying by cash ask for a paper transfer. Transfers are automatic when using a PRESTO fare card. In Hamilton, you can transfer to HSR buses along the 2 Barton or 3 Cannon routes at Wilson Street and John Street North. HSR buses along routes 2 and 3 can take you within one block of the stadium. Transferring between Burlington Transit and the HSR is always free, but, if you hold a ticket to the game you can ride any HSR bus free of fare after 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
From the game:
Buses operate every 30 minutes from 8 until 9:30 p.m. from the Burlington Transit stop on King Street East at James Street North in downtown Hamilton. Starting at 10 p.m. shuttle buses operate from that stop. The shuttle buses leave Hamilton when they are full and the last shuttle to Burlington leaves at midnight. You must pay your fare aboard Burlington Transit buses by cash or with a PRESTO card.
DARTS (Disabled Accessible Regional Transit Service)
The City of Hamilton’s Accessible Transportation Services (ATS) contractor, DARTS, is providing service to and from Tim Hortons Field from within Hamilton or from approved transfer points for eligible passengers who need access to specialized transit due to physical or functional disability. Transfer points are:
- Burlington GO Station (for transfers from or to Burlington Handi-Van or connections to GO Transit);
- Aldershot GO Station (for transfers from or to Burlington Handi-Van or connections to GO Transit); and
- Tim Horton’s at 1242 Highway 8, Winona (for transfers from or to Niagara Specialized Transit).
Grey Cup ticket holders can travel free of fare aboard DARTS vehicles after 3:30 p.m. with a valid ticket. Perimeter access beyond Cannon Street East, Balsam Avenue North, Beechwood Avenue and Melrose Avenue North is limited: just one point of access is available for DARTS vehicles, (Balsam and Cannon); and two possible drop-off points (Gate 1A or Gate 4A).
Grey Cup security staff will be controlling entry of vehicles, including DARTS vehicles, into the perimeter; a DARTS driver supervisor will be at entry point.
Gate numbers for drop-off and pick-up must be the same for all DARTS trips to the Grey Cup and must be arranged at time of reservation.
GO Transit
01 Lakeshore West
To the game:
Westbound GO trains arrive in West Harbour GO Station every hour, starting at 8:03 a.m.
Starting at 3:30 p.m., the HSR provides free service on regularly scheduled routes and DARTS accessible transportation services for passengers with valid 108th Grey Cup game tickets. It also offers special shuttle buses: West Harbour GO is one of four locations in Hamilton with express shuttle-bus service to and from Tim Hortons Field.
Look for signs with information to direct you from the GO train to an HSR shuttle bus at West Harbour GO. The shuttle bus stop is on James Street North beside the station. Staff will also be on site to help you find the bus stop.
From the game
GO is adjusting its train service to help get you home after the game. The last scheduled eastbound train of the night leaves West Harbour GO at 11:32 p.m., dropping off or picking up passengers in all stations to Union Station.
The final train of the night leaves West Harbour after passengers from the last HSR shuttle bus arrive at the station. HSR is aiming to have all passengers wishing to connect to train in West Harbour GO by midnight.
09 Lakeshore East
To accommodate passengers travelling from the Grey Cup Festival, GO is adjusting the last eastbound train that usually leaves Union at 12:45 a.m. Instead, it leaves Union at 1:04 a.m. Buses replace trains east of Guildwood GO Station due to construction on the line this weekend. The bus leaves Guildwood at 1:35 a.m.
Hamilton Street Railway
You can board any HSR bus after 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 12 and ride free of fare, if you have a valid ticket for the game.
2 Barton
To the game
Exit inbound buses at Barton Street East and Chapple Street, then walk one block southward along Lenister Avenue to Tim Hortons Field. Exit outbound buses at Barton Street East and Lenister Avenue and walk one block southward.
From the game
Walk northward from the stadium along Lenister Avenue. Board inbound buses at Barton Street East and Chapple Street. Board outbound buses at Barton East and Lenister.
3 Cannon
All day Sunday, December 12 and before 7 a.m. Monday, December 13, the City of Hamilton is closing
- Cannon Street East between Balsam and Melrose Avenues North
to help maintain a security zone before, during and after the event at Tim Hortons Field. The HSR is detouring the buses, while the street is closed.
Sunday,December 12 and before 7 a.m. Monday, December 13, inbound buses operate along their regular route to Cannon Street East and Gage Avenue North, then detour:
southward along Gage North;
westward along King Street East; and then
northward along Sherman Avenue North to Cannon East,
resuming their regular route westward along Cannon.

Instead, inbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

Express shuttle buses operate from four locations in Hamilton to Tim Hortons Field for the game. Buses operate to King Street East between Connaught Avenue North and Lottridge Street south of the stadium, dropping off passengers in one of four distinct zones:
- between Connaught and Balsam Avenues North for Black line express buses;
- between Balsam North and Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre for Red line buses;
- between the recreation centre and Melrose Avenue North for Green line buses; and
- between Melrose North and Lottridge for Gold line buses.

Buses leaving the Tim Hortons Field area pick up passengers on King Street East from the same four zones:
- between Connaught and Balsam Avenues North for Black line express buses;
- between Balsam North and Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre for Red line buses;
- between the recreation centre and Melrose Avenue North for Green line buses; and
- between Melrose North and Lottridge for Gold line buses.
After the game, buses leave on “an as-needed basis”, with HSR officials prioritizing Green line buses to make sure passengers can connect with the last train from West Harbour GO Station.
Buses may not pick up passengers during the first round of departures. The buses will continue to pick up passengers travelling by transit until they’ve served all passengers. The HSR is targetting midnight as the end of service for the shuttle buses.
Black Line (East - Stoney Creek)
To the game
- GO buses along the 12 Niagara Falls / Burlington route arrive at the site of the future Confederation GO Station at 3:52, 4:52 and 5:52 p.m.
- Shuttle buses start picking up passengers at 3:40 p.m. and operate every 20 minutes from Confederation until 6 p.m.
- Buses leave Eastgate Terminal at 3:45 p.m. and every 20 minutes until 6:05 p.m.
- Buses arrive on King Street East between Connaught and Balsam Avenues North near Tim Hortons Field at 4 p.m. and every 10 minutes until 6:20 p.m.
Buses serve Confederation GO Station, Sandman Hotel, Four Points by Sheraton, Comfort Inn Hamilton and Eastgate Square.

- Buses arrive on King Street East between Melrose Avenue North and Lottridge Street near Tim Hortons Field at 4 p.m. and every 15 minutes until 6:15 p.m.
