TTC revises routes and services, January 2

Update — Friday, January 7, 7:43 p.m.: Buses operate to and from the temporary terminal at Wilson Station, starting Monday, January 17.

The TTC is making minor changes to its routes and services, starting Sunday, January 2.

Due to “operator workforce shortages”, the TTC temporarily decreased the frequency of service along Line 2 Bloor - Danforth subway, one streetcar route and 57 bus routes, starting Sunday, November 21. The TTC says it’s made “provisions… to protect service on the busiest corridors in the system during the busiest periods.” The November decreases continue through January and early February.

Due to fewer riders boarding buses resulting from social distancing and lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, the TTC continues to suspend service along these express routes:

  • 141 Downtown / Mt Pleasant express;
  • 142 Downtown / Avenue Rd express;
  • 143 Downtown / Beach express;
  • 144 Downtown / Don Valley express; and
  • 145 Downtown / Humber Bay express.

The TTC also continues to suspend service along these routes due to the pandemic:

  • 176 Mimico GO shuttle;
  • 508 Lake Shore.

The TTC continues to suspend service along this route due to Metrolinx construction of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line:

  • 103 Mt Pleasant North.

As a pilot project, the TTC continues to combine route 503 service with the former 502 Downtowner route, as it has since September 9, 2019.

Starting Monday, January 3, streetcars drop off or pick up passengers at stops on the route:

  • every 8 minutes, instead of every 8½ minutes, Mondays to Fridays during afternoon rush hours.

Revising the path for streetcars along a route

501 Queen

The TTC is extending the long-term detour for streetcars along the route due to building construction on Charlotte Street. Cars continue to operate along King Streets East and West east of Parliament, but continue to operate further westward to Bathurst Street.

Starting Sunday, January 3, westbound cars operate along their long-term detour routing to King Street West and Spadina Avenue, then proceed:

westward along King West;
northward along Bathurst Street; and then
eastward into Wolseley Loop,
ending their trips.

Westbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on Spadina Avenue beyond King Street West and
  • on Charlotte Street at Oxley Street.

TTC streetcars along other routes continue to serve passengers at these stops.

  • Spadina: 510 Spadina.
  • Charlotte: 503 Kingston Rd.

Instead, westbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at new stops (for this route):

  • on King Street West beyond Spadina Avenue and at Portland and Bathurst Streets,
  • on Bathurst Street at Queen Street West and
  • in Wolseley Loop.

Eastbound cars start their trips in Wolseley Loop, then proceed:

southward along Bathurst Street; and then
eastward along King Street West to Charlotte Street,
resuming their regular route eastward along King West.

  • on Charlotte Street at Oxley Street.

TTC streetcars along other routes continue to serve passengers at this stop.

  • Charlotte: 503 Kingston Rd.

The TTC is also increasing and decreasing the frequency of service along the route during various time periods.

According to transit blogger Steve Munro, “at Charlotte Loop, construction at King Street will partly block the road and this will reduce layover space available. With only the 503 service using the loop, it will be able to lay over south of Adelaide while the 501 cars travel west to Bathurst and then north to Wolseley Loop. Streetcar service via Queen to Bathurst will be restored in the mid-February schedules.”

Transit agencies often interline buses along two or more routes with a common terminal to save resources — human resources (meaning: drivers) and physical resources (meaning: buses).

For example, Saturday, Sunday and holiday evenings when a northbound bus along the 75 Sherbourne route arrives at intersection of South Drive with Glen Road, it then completes a round trip along the 82 Rosedale route before returning to the intersection. It then proceeds southward along route 75.
