MiWay resuming service along two routes, starting February 7

Starting Monday, February 7, MiWay is resuming service along these routes:

  • 76 City Centre - Subway; and
  • 110 University express.

The Mississauga transit agency temporarily suspended service along both routes Monday, January 17, responding to “transit operator staff shortages due to COVID-19 and self-isolation requirements.”

Also, MiWay notes that the University of Toronto is restoring in-person learning at the university’s Mississauga campus (“the University of Toronto at Mississauga” or UTM). Since the University cancelled classes, it also reduced the demand for service to and from the campus.

MiWay continues to temporarily suspend service along the 101 / 101A Dundas express route. Buses along route 101 / 101A usually also operated to and from UTM. As an alternative service option for UTM passengers, MiWay is assigning 18-metre (60-foot) articulated (or “bendy”) buses to operate along the 1C Dundas - Collegeway route “to increase passenger capacity and prevent potential instances of overcrowding.”

MiWay says it ” continues to implement temporary service changes in response to COVID-19 related staff shortages (symptomatic and isolations) to free up resources for re-allocation and deliver more reliable service where it is needed most.”

According to the transit agency, before it suspends a route, staff carefully consider various scenarios to lessen the impact service reductions have on passengers, including:

  • “Monitoring ridership levels on each route to ensure MiWay is adapting to changes in demand, while balancing daily service delivery challenges as it relates to current staffing shortages;
  • “Allocating longer buses (60-foot articulated) on routes where ridership is higher to reduce potential overcrowding;
  • “Ensuring alternate routes are available so [passengers] can access other service options; and
  • “Updating [passengers] about service changes in advance so [they] can plan ahead.”

Since Friday, January 7, MiWay has suspended service along the 101 / 101A Dundas express and 107 Malton express routes due to the staff shortages. It also decreased the frequency of service along the 103 Hurontario route, starting that day.

Since Friday, December 11, 2020, MiWay has suspended service along the 104 Derry express route. It also continues to suspend service along the 100 Airport express route.
