King West / Peter / Blue Jays track repairs: TTC detours, February 19, 20, 21

Starting 5 a.m. Saturday, February 19, TTC track crews are setting up a work zone to repair rail in the eastbound track

  • on King Street West west of Peter Street / Blue Jays Way.

Track staff also recently identified another nearby site requiring repair,

  • on King Street East east of Peter Street / Blue Jays Way.

If time permits, the crew will also complete this second repair, and if not, will schedule that work for a future date.

The TTC will operate buses instead of streetcars through the area. Since buses along 504C route already serve passengers at stops west of King West / Strachan Avenue, it will extend the path of those buses so that they operate to and from Distillery Loop this weekend.

Track repairs at King / Peter / Blue Jays and the resulting TTC service changes continue until February 21 (4 a.m.).

Buses along the 504D shuttle route — between Broadview Station and King East / Parliament Street — continue to operate with regular service. Buses along the 304 King overnight route continue to operate with regular service.

After the crew have set up the work zone, they start cutting into the concrete by 7 a.m. They then remove the concrete to expose the old rail and continue until 11 p.m. The TTC says, “While most work typically ends at 11 p.m., rail work of this nature requires periods of around-the-clock work to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete.”

The crew then replaces the old rail with new rail, requiring cutting and welding and grinding. They then pour concrete in the track area and set it to cure. The new concrete requires curing time before the crews can remove the work zone by Monday morning so that streetcars and other vehicles can resume using the roadway.

The City of Toronto is prohibiting on-street parking near the work zone. Only TTC replacement buses operate in both directions on King Street West between Charlotte Street and Peter Street / Blue Jays Way. Buses in both directions operate only along the eastbound curb lane. The City has closed the block to all other traffic. A flag person will help direct bus drivers through the area. Except for bus drivers, eastbound motorists must turn left onto Charlotte and westbound motorists must turn right onto Peter.
