Metrolinx intends to build the Ontario Line subway between Exhibition Place / Ontario Place and the area near the Ontario Science, through downtown Toronto.
Starting “as early as” Friday, March 11, Metrolinx contractors are preparing a site surrounding Exhibition GO Station for upcoming “early-works” construction activities, including removing some trees on the site. During early-works construction, the contractors are installing infrastructure to help keep passengers moving through the station during future Ontario Line construction.
Arborists for early works at the Exhibition Station site recently identified 49 trees that Metrolinx can remove to clear the perimeter of the work zone. They inventoried a total of 116 trees. A certified arborist from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) completed the report for the site. A qualified arborist will also supervise all work in a “minimum tree protection zone” and direct construction workers when necessary.
Activities to get ready for early works construction at Exhibition GO Station include demolishing the south platform. Residents and business people near the work zone can expect to hear noise from trucks and other construction equipment. However, the activity will not impact pedestrians, traffic or road access. Metrolinx will co-ordinate the work to make sure that it can reduce the impact to GO Transit passengers to a minimum, including completing work during off-peak hours and making sure that accessible paths are always available to pedestrians.
Crews are removing trees from the site for four weeks, every day from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Crews are demolishing the south platform for five days during the same time period. This period of preparing for early-works construction at Exhibition Station continues “until mid-April”, meaning as late as until April 16.
