The TTC is continuing its "Easier Access" program to install elevators in its rapid-transit stations, making the subway system accessible for everyone. The program supports the government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The provincial legislation commits the TTC to achieving a barrier-free transit system by 2025.
Starting “as early as” Monday, March 28, TTC and contractor crews are relocating utilities to get ready for the upcoming project to install elevators and make Christie Station accessible. This will involve saw-cutting.
Bell and Rogers crews are removing and installing new temporary utility poles and cables south of Erlichman Lane. Toronto Hydro is connecting new temporary light poles. The utility crews will set up small work zones in the City of Toronto right-of-way on Christie Street and in the lane, temporarily restricting traffic lanes. Some parking at 710 - 716 Bloor Street West will be temporarily unavailable while the crews complete the project.
Crews mostly work Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Trucks and vacuuming equipment will be present; expect noise, dust and vibration. The work does not impact TTC bus or subway service.
The TTC expects to start construction on the elevators later this spring or summer.
The project includes:
- A barrier-free path from the main entrance to all levels of the station, including:
- two forward-motion elevators to serve the concourse level, westbound and eastbound platforms;
- tactile walking surface indicators at the top landing of stairs to platforms;
- automatic sliding doors; and
- better signs.
