Update — Saturday, May 7, 8:24 a.m.: The TTC starts phase two of the project, further detouring streetcars and buses, starting Sunday, May 8.
Monday, April 11, the TTC starts a project to upgrade the terminal at Dundas West Station. During the project, crews are:
- rebuilding the streetcar tracks in the terminal;
- modifying the platform for streetcar passengers; and
- re-aligning the overhead streetcar wiring in some areas to improve how the TTC’s low-floor Flexity Outlook streetcars operate through the terminal.
Construction on the project takes place in three phases:
- Phase one: replacing the tracks in Dundas West Station terminal and expanding the platform for streetcars along the 505 Dundas route (Monday, April 11 until Saturday, May 7);
- Phase two: replacing the tracks on Dundas Street West, including “special track work” (curves and switches), between Edna Avenue and the terminal entrance (Sunday, May 8 until Saturday, June 18); and
- Phase three: replacing the tracks on Edna Avenue (starting Sunday, June 19).
During the Dundas West Station project, crews also work on two other nearby streetcar-infrastructure projects:
- modifying the eastbound streetcar stop on Dundas Street West beyond Roncesvalles Avenue; and
- permanently repairing a section of track on Dundas Street West south of Bloor Street West.
The TTC explains that the work on Dundas West south of Bloor West “is of an emergency nature. This work will be scheduled early in the project. Details will be provided in a future notice prior to the start of the emergency work.”
Construction in the terminal does not affect subway service along Line 2 Bloor - Danforth and passengers can continue to enter or exit the station through the usual access points.
The TTC originally planned to start this project Monday, April 4.
During phase 1, crews remove track and concrete in the terminal at the west end and progress eastward toward Dundas Street West.
The TTC is detouring buses and streetcars along these routes:
- 40 Junction - Dundas West: Buses continue operate to and from the area of Dundas West Station, picking up passengers at a stop on Edna Avenue at Dundas Street West
- 168 Symington: Buses continue operate to and from the area of Dundas West Station, picking up passengers at a stop on Edna Avenue at Dundas Street West.
- 304 King overnight: buses operate to and from High Park Station terminal;
- 306 Carlton overnight: streetcars operate to and from High Park Loop;
- 312 St Clair - Junction overnight: Buses continue operate to and from the area of Dundas West Station, picking up passengers at a stop on Edna Avenue at Dundas Street West.
- 402 Parkdale community bus: The TTC has not yet announced detour information.
- 504C King shuttles: buses operate to and from High Park Station terminal; and
- 505 Dundas: streetcars operate to and from High Park Loop.
The TTC continues to replace streetcars along the 304 King overnight and 504A King routes with buses. The buses operate due the ongoing City of Toronto / TTC project to replace the streetcar tracks and improve the street infrastructure at the intersection of Queen Street West / King Street West / The Queensway / Roncesvalles Avenue.
^ Note that the map contains an error. Route 306 and 505 cars operate directly between Howard Park Avenue and Dundas Street West. They don’t operate along Roncesvalles Avenue between Dundas West and Howard Park.
Crews typically work on major construction activities, including breaking concrete, excavating and removing rail from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily. If necessary, crews may work as late as 11 p.m.
While crews move rail into position, install the new rail and grind and weld the new rail, they may work late evenings, overnight and weekends. The TTC says, “After-hours work is required to preserve the integrity of the rail and support daytime construction.”
Crews work on the overhead wiring before and after they remove the old track and install the new track.
