Queen East track repairs: TTC detours, starting April 15

Starting 5 a.m. Good Friday, Friday, April 15, TTC crews are repairing tracks and concrete

  • on Queen Street East between Boulton and Broadview Avenues.

If the crews can complete these repairs before schedule, they may also repair the concrete

  • on Queen Street East at Booth Avenue.

(Note that a TTC notice, likely an error, has announced that crews are also repairing more tracks on Queen East at Coady Avenue.)

The TTC is also detouring streetcars along these routes to accommodate the repair project:

  • 301 Queen overnight; and
  • 501 Queen.

Shuttle buses replace the cars east of Broadview Avenue.

Track repairs on Queen East and the resulting TTC detours continue until April 17 (4 a.m.)

Note that the TTC continues to operate shuttle buses along two other routes due to ongoing construction at the intersection of Queen Street West / King Street West / The Queensway / Roncesvalles Avenue. Be sure to check bus destination signs if you’re travelling westbound on Queen East between River and Church Streets or eastbound between Ontario Street and Broadview Avenue.

To add to the confusion this weekend, the TTC will also short-turn the buses from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Easter, Sunday, April 17 to accommodate the annual Beaches Easter Parade.

The TTC intends this project to return the area to a state of good repair. Crews mostly work in the track area to excavate and remove the old concrete, repair the rail and place new concrete.

Thursday, April 14, crews start early saw-cutting of concrete in the area. A track crew will set up the work zone at 5 a.m. Friday, April 15. By 7 a.m., they start removing concrete to complete the necessary repairs.

The TTC explains that, “While most work typically ends at 10 p.m., work of this nature requires periods of around-the-clock work to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete.”

While crews repair the rail, they also cut, weld and grind the rail. They’ll pour concrete in the track area and set it to cure. The new concrete requires curing time before the crews can remove the work zone and motorists can again operate their vehicles along the streetcar right of way.

The work zone will restrict traffic to just one lane in each direction during this project. The City of Toronto will temporarily prohibit on-street parking near the work zone. Motorists won’t be able to turn left onto or off of Queen East near the work zone.
