Greenwood Station "Easier Access" construction: Phase 3 starts May 8; TTC detouring buses

The TTC is continuing its “Easier Access” program to install elevators in its rapid-transit stations, making the subway system accessible for everyone. The program supports the government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The provincial legislation commits the TTC to achieving a barrier-free transit system by 2025.

Starting Monday, May 8, TTC contractors start Phase 3 of the project to install elevators at Greenwood Station.

During stage 3, the TTC closes the bus terminal at the station and detours buses along this route:

  • 31 Greenwood.

Buses operate to and from Coxwell Station bus terminal. The TTC is setting up temporary stops on Danforth Avenue at Linnsmore Crescent for passengers transferring between buses and Line 2 Bloor - Danforth subway trains at Greenwood Station.

Phase 2 continues.

Crews continue to work on phase 2 of the project while they set up the work zone for phase 3.

During phase 2, City of Toronto Water contractors are replacing a 100-year-old sewer at the northwest corner of Strathmore Boulevard and Linnsmore Cresent.

To accommodate phase 2, the City has closed:

  • Linnsmore Crescent north of Strathmore Boulevard.

  • Crews start “dewatering” activities “as early as” Monday, May 8. They place a self-contained generator in the City’s right of way to continuously supply power to the dewatering pump. You may hear a consistent low hum. The generator must be on consistently to make sure crews can complete construction safely.
  • Crews also excavate and install a maintenance hole on the east side of Linnsmore and other civil works continue.
  • The crews then backfill the northbound lane of traffic on Linnsmore, compacted the site with asphalt, allowing the City to re-open the street to traffic.

Phase 2 construction at Greenwood Station continues “until late May”, meaning as late as until May 31.

Stage 3 starts

During Stage 3, the City reopens the northbound lane on Linnsmore Crescent north of Strathmore Boulevard to traffic, but closes all traffic lanes on Strathmore west of Linnsmore.

  • Crews maintain the work zone on the southbound lanes of Linnsmore north of Strathmore, but expand it to include all lanes of Strathmore and the northern part of the station building.
  • They also set up a smaller work zone on the east side of Linnsmore south of Strathmore to access underground utilities.
  • Crews may reconfigure traffic lanes as work progresses.
  • Crews also jet-grout, install caissons, excavate and take part in other activities to build the elevator shafts.
  • A vacuum truck will also be on site to help the crews safely excavate around utilities.
  • The TTC is closing the station terminal and detouring buses, starting Sunday, May 8.

Crews mostly work Mondays to Fridays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., as necessary. However, they may also work overnight and weekends during the course of the project to complete the work as quickly as possible.

Expect noise, dust and vibration. The TTC will implement “mitigation measures”, such as monitoring vibrations, wet-cutting concrete and installing mesh fencing to reduce dust.

Construction trucks, equipment and workers will be present in the general area.
