Queen East track repairs: TTC detour, starting May 21

Starting Friday, May 20, TTC crews are repairing the streetcar tracks

  • on Queen Street East between River and Parliament Streets.

During this project, the crews:

  • saw-cut the old concrete;
  • break and remove the old concrete;
  • install new rail; and
  • install new concrete.

The transit agency is detouring streetcars along this route, during the project:

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Broadview Avenue and Parliament Street.

The TTC continues to operate buses, instead of streetcars, along the 301 Queen overnight route, so the track-repair project doesn’t affect service along that route.

From 9 a.m. Friday, May 20, crews start concrete saw-cutting, while the TTC maintains streetcar service through the work zone.

From 7 a.m. Saturday, May 21, crews start working at Parliament Street and continue working eastward along the street toward River Street to address various sections of tracks to repair. This requires them to break the concrete to expose the old rail and remove the loose concrete. Typically, crews finish breaking and removing concrete by 10 p.m.

The TTC says, “Rail work of this nature is required around-the-clock to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete.”

Crews continue repairing the tracks throughout the weekend, requiring them to cut, weld and grind the new rail. Once they’ve finished repairing the rail, they pour concrete in the track area and set it to cure. The new concrete requires curing time before the crews can remove the work zone so that all vehicles can resume using the full road by Victoria Day, Monday, May 23 morning.
