https://transittoronto.ca/archives/weblog/2022/12/08-kingwest.shtml Updated — Tuesday, September 13, 10:15 p.m. (via Steve Munro: “As of about noon today, the service was operating via Parkside Drive…” Also, buses resume direct service through Parkdale and are detouring around the King / Shaw intersection.

Updated — Sunday, September 5, 7:30 a.m. (via Steve Munro: “Although the new diversion via Parkside and The Queensway was supposed to begin on September 4, buses are still operating via Roncesvalles. Also, the south leg of the KQQR intersection is not yet open, and so the diversions through Parkdale via Triller to King eastbound and Dufferin to Queen westbound are still in effect.” Also, “The extended loop [around King West / Shaw construction] had not yet gone into operation because the King & Shaw intersection is still open.”

Starting Tuesday, September 6, the City of Toronto and the TTC start a project (.pdf) to renew aging streetcar tracks at

  • the intersection of King Street West and Shaw Street

and resurface the roadway. The City also is replacing 80 meters of the water main under King Street West.

Crews work in two phases:

  • Phase 1: replacing the water main on King West east and west of Shaw; and
  • Phase 2: replacing the streetcar tracks at King / Shaw.

During phase 1, the work zone restricts traffic to just one lane in each direction. During phase 2, starting Monday, September 26, the City also closes the intersection to all traffic.

Starting Sunday, September 4, the TTC is detouring buses and streetcars along these routes so they avoid the work zone:

  • 63 Ossington;
  • 304 King overnight;
  • 363 Ossington overnight; and
  • 504 King.

Shuttle buses replace streetcars west of Bathurst Street due to ongoing construction at the intersection of Queen Street West / King Street West / The Queensway / Roncesvalles Avenue. The TTC is also further detouring the buses due to the closure of Roncesvalles between Harvard Avenue and Queen Street West / The Queensway as part of that project.

The TTC also continues to detour the cars due to track- and switch construction at the intersection of King Street East with Sumach Street.

^ (Updated — Tuesday, September 13, 10:15 p.m.) Map of the detour service-pattern for the 504 King route, as of Tuesday, September 13 — except the map shows service into the Distillery District, which is not occurring due to ongoing construction at the intersection of King Street East with Sumach Street.

Track and water-main construction at King Street West / Shaw Street and the resulting TTC detours continue until November 12.

Crews work on this project 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They’ll excavate and break concrete during various times throughout the day. However they’ll only break concrete from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. The City and TTC explain that “Concrete-breaking work is the most disruptive and will typically last the first one to two days for each phase of the construction. Around-the-clock work during rail installation by TTC is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete. Overnight rail work by TTC may consist of moving new rail into position, rail installation and rail welding / grinding.”
