Toronto International Film Festival: TTC detouring streetcars, starting September 8

Update — Wednesday, September 7, 2:48 p.m.: The TTC has confirmed the detour for streetcars along the 503 Kingston Rd route. It also has announced that construction at the intersection of King Street East with Sumach Street continues, so it’s modifying the detours it previously announced.

From 5 a.m. Thursday, September 8 until 5 a.m. Monday, September 12 and again from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, September 13, the City of Toronto is closing

  • parts of King Street West between Spadina and University avenues

to accommodate the various activities of the Toronto International Film Festival.

(Updated — Wednesday, September 7, 2:48 p.m.) The TTC is detouring streetcars along this route these routes, while the street is closed:

  • 503 Kingston Rd; and
  • 504 King.

(Updated — Wednesday, September 7, 2:48 p.m.) The TTC service advisory indicates that streetcars again operate through the intersection of King Street East with Sumach Street, so, presumably, construction there ends by September 8.

(Updated — Wednesday, September 7, 2:48 p.m.) ^ Map of the detours. Unfortunately, the still shows streetcars operating along King Street East east of Parliament Street and along Sumach and Cherry Streets, which isn’t happening during the festival.

Shuttle buses replace the cars west of Church Street.

The TTC continues to replace streetcars with buses along this route, which it’s also detouring:

  • 304 King overnight.

(Updated — Wednesday, September 7, 2:48 p.m.) It’s likely also detouring streetcars along this route:

  • 503 Kingston Rd.

However, the TTC’s on-line service advisory doesn’t mention route 503 cars, even though they also operate along the closed section of King Street West. Note that local transit expert Steve Munro advises that route 503 cars will only operate as shuttle service between Bingham and Woodbine loops, meaning they only serve passengers at stops on Kingston Road between Victoria Park Avenue and Queen Street East.)

According to a TTC news release, “Red carpet events will… be held at Roy Thompson Hall, Princess of Wales Theatre and Royal Alexandra Theatre from Sept. 14 to 17. The TTC has worked with TIFF to ensure diversions are not required, but [passengers] may experience minor delays during this period.”
