Bay streetcar tunnel and Queens Quay West infrastructure maintenance: TTC detours, starting October 8



Update — Tuesday, October 10, 2:10 p.m.: @TTCHelp has tweeted: “Over the weekend, maintenance work was completed across the Harbourfront substation, the Harbourfront Tunnel and Queens Quay ROW. The repairs included streetcar traction power cabling replacement, a new mounted feeder switch, plus tunnel maintenance at Union Station.”

Starting 12:01 a.m. Saturday, October 8, the TTC is closing

  • the Bay streetcar tunnel,

while crews inspect and maintain the streetcar infrastructure in the tunnel and on nearby Queens Quay West.

TTC crews and contractors are:

  • inspecting and maintaining overhead wire;
  • cleaning debris and sand on the tracks and in the drainage system; and
  • maintaining utilities on Queens Quay West.

The TTC is operating buses, instead of streetcars, along this route, while the tunnel and nearby tracks are closed:

  • 509 Harbourfront.

The transit agency is also detouring streetcars along these routes:

  • 310 Spadina overnight; and
  • 510 Spadina.

Buses also replace route 310 cars east of Lower Spadina Avenue / Queens Quay West.

Crews continue inspecting and maintaining infrastructure in the Bay streetcar tunnel and on Queens Quay West and the TTC detours the cars until October 13 (4 a.m.).


The TTC says that “Most work will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Work inside the tunnel may occur around-the-clock.”

Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9, crews require access to a utility chamber under the roadway just south of the streetcar entrance to the tunnel. The work zone blocks traffic lanes on Queens Quay West, requiring motorists and cyclists to divert around the area. Temporary traffic controls will be in place, including “paid-duty” Toronto Police Service officers and flag person.

Crews also complete daytime maintenance activities around Queens Quay / Spadina Loop and on Queens Quay West at York Street.


509 Harbourfront

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, October 8 until 4 a.m. Thursday, October 13, buses replace streetcars.

Eastbound buses start their trips in Exhibition Loop, then proceed:

eastward along the Exhbition Loop access road, Manitoba Drive and Fleet Street;
north- and eastward along Fort York Boulevard;
southward along Bathurst Street;
eastward along Queens Quay West;
northward along Bay Street;
westward along Wellington Street West; and then
northward along York Street to King Street West,
ending their trips.

Eastbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • in Exhibition Loop,
  • on Manitoba Drive at Strachan Avenue,
  • on Fleet Street at Fort York Boulevard,
  • on Fort York Boulevard beyond Bastion Street and at Bathurst Street,
  • on Queens Quay West beyond Bathurst Street, Dan Leckie Way and Lower Spadina Avenue, at Rees Street and beside the Harbourfront Centre,
  • on Bay Street beyond Queens Quay West and Lake Shore Boulevard West and at Front Street West,
  • on Wellington Street West at York Street and
  • on York Street at King Street West.

Eastbound buses skip regular route 509 stops

  • on Fleet Street beyond Fort York Boulevard, across from Bastion Street and at Bathurst Street and
  • in the Bay streetcar tunnel:
  • at Queens Quay Station; and
  • at Union Station.

Buses serve passengers at stops beside the curb on Queens Quay West, instead of the “island” streetcar stops on the south-side streetcar right-of-way.

Westbound buses start their trips on York Street at King Street West, then proceed:

eastward along King West;
southward along Bay Street;
westward along Queens Quay West;
northward along Bathurst Street;
west- and southward along Fort York Boulevard;
westward along Lake Shore Boulevard West and Princes’ Boulevard;
northward along Strachan Avenue; and then
westward along Manitoba Drive and the Exhibition Loop access road to Exhibition Loop,
ending their trips.

Westbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on York Street at King Street West,
  • on Bay Street beyond Front Street West and Harbour Street,
  • on Queens Quay West beyond York and Rees Streets, Lower Spadina Avenue and Dan Leckie Way,
  • on Bathurst Street beyond Queens Quay West,
  • on Manitoba Drive beyond Strachan Avenue; and
  • in Exhibition Loop.

  • in the Bay streetcar tunnel:

Buses serve passengers at stops beside the curb on Queens Quay West, instead of the “island” streetcar stops on the south-side streetcar right-of-way.

510 Spadina

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, October 8 until 4 a.m. Thursday, October 13, streetcars start and end their trips in Spadina / Queens Quay Loop.

South- and eastbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on Queens Quay at Rees Street and beside Harbourfront Centre and
  • in the Bay streetcar tunnel:
  • in Queens Quay Station; and
  • in Union Station.

Instead, south- and eastbound cars drop off passengers at a temporary stop

  • in Spadina / Queens Quay Loop.

Buses replace the cars east of Queens Quay West and Lower Spadina Avenue. South- and eastbound passengers may transfer to eastbound buses on Queens Quay West beyond Lower Spadina Avenue.

West- and northbound cars skip their regular stops

  • in the Bay streetcar tunnel:
  • in Union Station and
  • in Queens Quay Station and
  • on Queens Quay West beyond York and Rees Streets.

  • on Queens Quay at Rees Street and beside Harbourfront Centre and
  • in the Bay streetcar tunnel:
  • in Queens Quay Station; and
  • in Union Station.

Instead, south- and eastbound cars drop off passengers at a temporary stop

  • in Spadina / Queens Quay Loop.

Buses replace the cars east of Queens Quay West and Lower Spadina Avenue. South- and eastbound passengers may transfer to eastbound buses on Queens Quay West beyond Lower Spadina Avenue.

West- and northbound cars skip their regular stops

  • in the Bay streetcar tunnel:

310 Spadina overnight shuttle buses

From Saturday, October 8 until 4 a.m. Thursday, October 13, buses replace streetcars along the 310 Spadina streetcar route east and north of Lower Spadina Avenue / Queens Quay West, while crews inspect the Bay streetcar tunnel.

Eastbound buses start their trips on Fort York Boulevard west of Lower Spadina Avenue, then proceed:

southward along Lower Spadina;
eastward along Queens Quay West;
northward along Bay Street;
westward along Wellington Street West; and then
northward along York Street to King Street West,
ending their trips.

Eastbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • on Queens Quay West beyond Lower Spadina Avenue, at Rees Street and beside the Harbourfront Centre,
  • on Bay Street beyond Queens Quay West and Lake Shore Boulevard West and at Front Street West,
