Major Mackenzie Drive Maple construction affects YRT service, starting November 17

Update — Friday, December 2, 6:04 p.m.: YRT is detouring buses along the 462 Maple high-school special route around the work zone, starting Monday, December 5.

Region of York contractors are starting a project to improve

  • Major Mackenzie Drive between Jane and Keele streets

in the Maple area of the City of Vaughan.

During this two-phase project, contractors are:

  • resurfacing Major Mackenzie Drive between Jane Street and McNaughton Road / Avro Road;
  • widening and rebuilding Major Mackenzie Drive between east of McNaughton Road / Avro Road and Keele Street;
  • installing a new centre turning lane on Major Mackenzie Drive between east of McNaughton Road / Avro Road and Keele Street;
  • installing a new eastbound right-turn lane at Keele Street;
  • upgrading all intersections to meet Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act standards;
  • installing a new 400-millimetre water main on Keele Street across Major Mackenzie Drive (on behalf of the City of Vaughan);
  • installing streetscaping features on Major Mackenzie Drive to align with the City of Vaughan’s Maple Heritage District plan; and
  • installing sidewalks and bicycles paths in the boulevards.

The work zone impacts roadways and traffic conditions in the area:

  • the work zone restricts traffic in all directions to just one lane at the intersection of Major Mackenzie / Keele Street as crews install the water main.
  • starting winter 2023, the work zone restricts traffic to just one lane on Major Mackenzie between Jane Street and McNaughton Road / Avro Road, while crews replace the storm pipe.

York Region Transit passengers aboard buses along these routes can expect delays:

  • 4 Major Mackenzie;
  • 22 King City;
  • 96 Keele - Yonge;
  • 107 Keele; and
  • 462 Maple high-school special.

Phase 1 of construction on Major Mackenzie Drive and the resulting YRT service changes continue “until February 2023”, meaning as late as until February 28, 2023.
