Metrolinx construction on Steeles East affects TTC, YRT services, January until March



Update — Thursday, January 26, 7:41 p.m.: The TTC has confirmed detours for its buses, starting January 27.


Update — Monday, January 16, 2:54 p.m.: According to @TTCnotices, the TTC is detouring buses along routes 53 and 953 as this post describes.


Starting January 2023 — perhaps as early as Tuesday, January 3Metrolinx construction blocks traffic lanes

  • on Steeles Avenue East near Yonge Street,

affecting transit services in the area.

(Unofficially, the construction is likely part of the project to extend the TTC’s Line 1 Yonge - University subway northward to Richmond Hill — but we can find no announcement from Metrolinx or others confirming that.)

York Region Transit has announced that it is “intermittently” detouring buses along this route during the construction:

  • 91 Bayview.

(Updated — Thursday, January 26, 7:41 p.m.) The TTC has not announced detours, but buses along these routes likely are also says it’s detouring buses along these routes, when necessary:

  • 53 Steeles East; and
  • 953 Steeles East express.

Metrolinx construction at Yonge / Steeles and the resulting TTC and YRT detours continue “until March”, meaning as late as until March 31.

“Intermittently”, from Tuesday, January 3 until Friday, March 31, southbound buses operate along their regular route to Steeles Avenue East and Willowdale Avenue / Willowdale Boulevard, then may detour:

southward along Willowdale;
westward along Madawaska Avenue to Yonge Street,
resuming their regular route southward along Yonge.

Southbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Steeles Avenue East at Willowdale Boulevard and Dudley Avenue and
  • on Yonge Street across from Abitibi Avenue and at Moore Park Avenue.

Northbound buses operate along their regular route to Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue, then may detour:

northward along Yonge;
eastward along Highland Park Avenue; and then
southward along Willowdale Boulevard to Steeles Avenue East,
resuming their regular route eastward along Steeles East.

Northbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Steeles Avenue East at Dumont Street and Willowdale Avenue.

(Updated — Thursday, January 26, 7:41 p.m.) “Intermittently”, from Tuesday, January 3 until Friday, March 31 and specifically from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., Friday, January 27 and daily from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Monday, January 30 until to Friday, February 3, westbound buses operate along their regular route to Steeles Avenue East and Willowdale Avenue / Willowdale Boulevard, then may detour:

southward along Willowdale Avenue;
westward along Madawaska Avenue to Yonge Street,
resuming their regular route southward along Yonge.

Westbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Steeles Avenue East at Willowdale Boulevard and Dudley Avenue and
  • on Yonge Street beyond Steeles Avenue West, across from Abitibi Avenue and at Moore Park Avenue.

Instead, westbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Willowdale Avenue beyond Steeles Avenue East and at Abitibi and Otonabee avenues.

Eastbound buses reverse the westbound detour routing.

Eastbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Yonge Street at Athabaska Avenue and Steeles Avenue East,
  • on Steeles Avenue East at Dumont Street and Willowdale Avenue.

Instead, eastbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Willowdale Avenue at Otonabee Avenue and beyond Abitibi Avenue.
953 Steeles East express

  • on Yonge Street beyond Steeles Avenue West.

Eastbound buses reverse the westbound detour routing.
