TTC revising routes and services, starting February 12

Update — Thursday, February 16, 7:45 a.m.: Toronto City Council approved the TTC’s 2023 budget during its meeting yesterday, Wednesday, February 15.

The TTC is revising its services, starting Sunday, February 12. In general, this service change is not good news for passengers, with the transit agency decreasing services along many routes, “to improve service reliability” or “to match service with [passenger] demand.”

Toronto City Council will consider the TTC’s 2023 budget during its meeting of Wednesday, February 15. Council approving the budget will result in the TTC having to further cut its services.

Due to fewer riders boarding buses resulting from social distancing and lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, the TTC continues to suspend service along these express routes:

  • 141 Downtown / Mt Pleasant express;
  • 142 Downtown / Avenue Rd express;
  • 143 Downtown / Beach express;
  • 144 Downtown / Don Valley express; and
  • 145 Downtown / Humber Bay express.

The TTC also continues to suspend service along this route due to the pandemic:

  • 508 Lake Shore.

The TTC continues to suspend service along this route due to Metrolinx construction of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line:

  • 103 Mt Pleasant North.

As a pilot project, the TTC continues to combine route 503 service with the former 502 Downtowner route, as it has since September 9, 2019.

337 Islington overnight

The work zone for the ongoing Metrolinx construction of the Finch West light rail transit line — the TTC’s future Line 6 — partially blocks the intersection of Finch Avenue West with Kipling Avenue. Accordingly, the TTC is revising the path for buses along the route, effectively reversing the direction of the wide on-street loop at the north end of the route.

Starting early Monday, February 13, southbound buses serve passengers at new stops (for this route):

  • on Kipling Avenue beyond Finch Avenue West, beyond Farr Avenue, at Panorama Court, beyond Rowntree Mill Road, across from Beaconhill Road and Kidron Valley Drive and at Steeles Avenue West and

337 Islington overnight

The work zone for the ongoing Metrolinx construction of the Finch West light rail transit line — the TTC’s future Line 6 — partially blocks the intersection of Finch Avenue West with Kipling Avenue. That means that southbound vehicles on Kipling, including buses, can’t turn left onto eastbound Finch West.

Accordingly, the TTC is revising the path for buses along the route, effectively reversing the direction of the wide on-street loop at the north end of the route.

Starting early Monday, February 13, southbound buses leave Steeles Avenue West, just east of Islington Avenue, then proceed:

eastward along Steeles West;
counterclockwise through Islington / Steeles Loop;
eastward along Steeles; and then
southward along Islington Avenue to Finch Avenue West,
resuming their usual route southward along Islington.

Southbound buses no longer drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • in Kipling / Steeles Loop and
  • on Kipling Avenue beyond Steeles Avenue West, at Kidron Valley Drive, Beaconhill Road, Annabelle Drive, Mount Olive Drive and Stevenson Road.

Instead, southbound buses serve passengers at new stops (for this route):

  • in Islington / Steeles Loop;
  • on Steeles Avenue West at Islington Avenue and
  • southbound on Islington Avenue at Humber Summit Lane and Muir Avenue, beyond Rowntree Mill Road, across from Milady Road and at Aviemore Drive and Finch Avenue West.

Transit agencies often interline transit vehicles along one or more routes with a common terminal to save resources: human resources — drivers — and physcial resources — vehicles. For example, after an eastbound bus along the 14 Glencairn route arrives in Davisville Station terminal, it then completes a round trip along the 28 Bayview South route. After returning to the terminal, it then continues westbound along route 14.
