TTC revises routes and services, March 26

TTC passengers finally get to see the effects of the City of Toronto’s budget up close on the streets near their homes, schools and work places as they can expect to wait longer at bus and streetcar stops and subway stations for the next vehicle. Since the number of passengers using transit is less than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic, starting Sunday, March 26, the transit agency is decreasing service along as many as 38 routes. Significantly, this affects subway riders along Line 2 Bloor - Danforth and Line 4 Sheppard during many times of the week. For example, Line 4 passengers will see less frequent service — about every seven minutes, instead of every 5 minutes — during all times.

In other news, the TTC is getting ready to permanently shut down Line 3 Scarborough later this year and replace the line with frequent express buses. But, first, it has to renovate the bus terminal at Scarborough Centre Station to accommodate the extra buses it needs to provide the service. It’s temporarily relocating the stops for buses along the 9 Bellamy and 134 Progress routes out of the terminal. Instead, buses along those routes start and end their trips on Busby Drive beside McCowan Station. The TTC is also relocating the stops most buses that usually pick up passengers on the north side of the terminal to temporary stops on the south.

Similarly, the TTC is extending the 985 Sheppard East express route to McCowan Station, and, sometimes, even further eastward to Centennial College’s Progress campus. Route 985 passengers also benefit from more frequent service every day due, in part, to this extension of the usual route.

And, the TTC is introducing transit service to the Stanley Greene neighbourhood in Downsview. It’s revamping service along the 101 Downsview Park route and introducing a new route, 128 Stanley Greene. Passengers can connect to Line 1 Yonge - University at either Downsview Park or Wison stations during rush hours.

Due to fewer riders boarding buses resulting from social distancing and lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, the TTC continues to suspend service along these express routes:

141 Downtown / Mt Pleasant express;
142 Downtown / Avenue Rd express;
143 Downtown / Beach express;
144 Downtown / Don Valley express; and
145 Downtown / Humber Bay express.

The TTC also continues to suspend service along this route due to the pandemic:

508 Lake Shore.

The TTC continues to suspend service along this route due to Metrolinx construction of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit line:

103 Mt Pleasant North.

As a pilot project, the TTC continues to combine route 503 service with the former 502 Downtowner route, as it has since September 9, 2019.

Starting Monday, March 27, eastbound buses along new route 128 start trips on Locust Lodge Gardens east of Stanley Greene Boulevard, then proceed:

northward along Stanley Greene;
westward along Downsview Park Boulevard;
southward along Keele Street;
eastward along Wilson Avenue;
northward along Transit Road; and then
eastward into Wilson Station bus terminal,
ending their trips.

The TTC is cancelling route 913 during construction at Scarborough Centre Station bus terminal. Construction continues “until summer 2023”, meaning as late as until September 30.

Introducing a new branch of a route

985D Sheppard East express

Starting Monday, March 27, the TTC introduces this new branch of the route for passengers travelling between Scarborough Centre Station and Centennial College’s Progress campus Mondays to Fridays before about 7 p.m.

Westbound buses drop off and pick up passengers at local stops between the campus and Scarborough Centre Station bus terminal before about 3 p.m. They operate express — with few stops — during afternoon rush hours.

Eastbound buses operate express during morning rush hours. They serve passengers at local stops from about 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Local buses serve passengers at stops along Corporate Drive. Express buses skip Corporate and, instead, operate non-stop along Progress Avenue between Bellamy Road / Corporate Drive and Consilium Place / Grangeway Avenue.

Buses along the revised 985A and the new 985D branch of the 985 Sheppard East express route provide an accessible connection between McCowan and Scarborough Centre Stations for passengers connecting from buses along the 9 Bellamy and 134 Progress routes.

Buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops on the new branch:

every 6 minutes Mondays to Fridays during morning rush hours;

every 16 minutes from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.; and

every 5½ minutes during afternoon rush hours.

Friday, March 24 is the last day until the end of construction at Scarborough Centre Station terminal that the TTC splits service at Scarborough Centre Station and operates buses along the 21A (Scarborough Centre Stn - Kennedy Stn) and 21B (Steeles - Scarborough Centre Stn) branches of the route Mondays to Fridays before about 7 p.m. Instead, starting Sunday, March 26, buses operate along the 21C (Steeles - Kennedy Stn via Scarborough Centre Stn) branch of the route during all times.

Construction at Scarborough Centre Station continues “until summer 2023”, meaning as late as until September 30.

The TTC is also increasing and decreasing the frequency of service along the route during various times and making another change to service along the route.

134C Progress

Friday, March 24 is the last day until the end of construction at Scarborough Centre Station terminal that the TTC operates buses along the 134C (Centennial College - Scarborough Centre Station) branch of the route Mondays to Fridays before about 7 p.m. Instead, starting Monday, March 27, buses along the new 985D branch of the 985 Sheppard East express route serve passengers travelling between the college and Scarborough Centre.

Friday, March 24 is the last day that the TTC splits service at Tapscott Road and operates buses along the 953A (Staines Rd - Finch Stn) and 95B (Markham Rd - Finch Stn) branches. Starting Monday, March 27, all buses operate to and from Staines and all buses divert to serve passengers travelling to and from the Amazon Fulfillment Centre.

The TTC is also increasing the frequency of service along the route and revising the path for buses along the route.

60C Steeles West

Friday, March 24 is the last day that the TTC operates buses along the 60C (Kipling - Pioneer Village Stn) branch of the route.

It’s increasing the frequency of service along the 960 Steeles West route to partially replace 60C service.

The TTC is expanding the terminal at Scarborough Centre Station to accommodate the many extra buses it needs to operate to and from the terminal when it permanently shuts down Line 3 Scarborough later this year. But, before then, the first phase of the project blocks bus access to part of the terminal and the TTC is temporarily revising the path for some of the buses that usually operate to and from it.

Starting Sunday, March 26, buses along the route temporarily start and end their trips on Bushby Drive just east of McCowan Road (beside McCowan Station), instead of in the terminal.

every 20 minutes, instead of every 24 minutes, from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

every 15½ minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, from about noon until 7 p.m.

Starting Monday, March 27, buses serve passengers at stops:

every 16 minutes, instead of every 9 minutes 15 seconds, Mondays to Fridays before about 9 a.m.;

every 10½ minutes, instead of every 7½ minutes from about 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.;

every 14 minutes, instead of every 8 minutes, from about 2 until 6:30 p.m.; and

every 14 minutes, instead of every 11 minutes, from about 6:30 until 10 p.m.

Starting Saturday, April 1, buses serve passengers at stops:

every 14 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, Saturdays before about noon; and

every 17 minutes, instead of every 10 minutes, from about noon until 7 p.m.

The TTC is also making other changes to service along the route.

336 Finch West overnight

“Effective Monday, May 8, the TTC has restored late night service on Lines 1 Yonge-University-Spadina and 2 Bloor-Danforth to every six minutes, seven days/week. This will be done with extra trains to supplement the scheduled service. The change will be formally scheduled in a future update.

“The additional subway service is made possible by an unexpectedly lower absentee rate among operators compared to budget. The TTC made a larger provision for covid-related sickness and finds itself with more available staff.”

The TTC is expanding the terminal at Scarborough Centre Station to accommodate the many extra buses it needs to operate to and from the terminal when it permanently shuts down Line 3 Scarborough later this year. 110 Islington South

The TTC is extending the path for buses along the 110C (Lake Shore - Islington Stn) branch of the route. Buses start and end their trips in “New Toronto Loop” — or what the TTC now calls “Kipling Loop”, on the east side of Kipling Avenue north of Lake Shore Boulevard West.

Starting Sunday, March 26, southbound** buses operate along their regular path to Islington Avenue north of Lake Shore Boulevard West, then proceed:

westward along Lake Shore West;

134 Progress

The TTC is expanding the terminal at Scarborough Centre Station to accommodate the many extra buses it needs to operate to and from the terminal when it permanently shuts down Line 3 Scarborough later this year. But, before then, the first phase of the project blocks bus access to part of the terminal and the TTC is revising the path for some of the buses that usually operate to and from it.

329 Dufferin overnight

Starting Monday, March 27, the TTC is adjusting the schedules for buses along the route early overnight Mondays to Fridays (meaning: early Tuesday-to-Saturday mornings). By adjusting the schedules, the TTC better aligns the times for first and last buses along the route with the start and end of service along the 29 Dufferin route.

31B Greenwood

The TTC is adjusting the schedules for buses along the branch to better serve passengers travelling from the Canada Post processing centre after shift changes.

Starting Monday, March 27, the southbound bus that usually leaves Coxwell Station at 3:44 p.m. Mondays to Fridays leaves, instead at at 3:46 p.m. The northbound bus that usually leaves Eastern Avenue west of Knox Avenue at 3:59 p.m. leaves, instead, at 4:05 p.m. The southbound bus that usually leaves Coxwell Station at 4:18 p.m. leaves, instead, 4:20 p.m.

34 Eglinton East

Buses along the 34A (Kennedy Stn - Eglinton Stn) and 34C (Flemingdon Park - Eglinton Stn) branches of the route don’t operate with the same headways (meaning the interval between buses along each branch).

Starting Sunday, March 26, the TTC “blends” the schedules for buses leaving Eglinton Station to evenly distribute service between the two branches. That means that buses along the route alternate between the two branches with every second bus operating along each of the branches.

945 Kipling express

Starting Monday, March 27, the TTC is adjusting the schedules for buses along the route Mondays to Fridays during rush hours.

35 Jane

Starting Monday, March 27, the TTC is adjusting the schedules for buses along the route early Monday-to-Friday mornings and late evenings. By adjusting the schedules, the TTC better aligns the times for first and last buses along the route with the start and end of service along the 335 Jane overnight route.

The TTC is also increasing and decreasing the frequency of service along the route.

Also starting Sunday, March 26, buses pick up passengers at a different platform than previously in Kennedy Station terminal. The buses serve passengers at the extreme west end of the south side of the terminal.

985 Sheppard East express

Starting Sunday, March 26, the TTC operates standard 12-metre-long (40-foot-long) buses, instead of 18-metre (60-foot) articulated (“bendy”) buses along the 985A branch of the route. Starting Monday, March 27, it operates standard buses along the new 985D branch of the route.

According to local transit commentator Steve Munro, “Buses will change from artics on the 985A to standard buses on the 985D because all of the bus bays at [Scarborough Centre] station on the active side of the platform are designed for the shorter vehicles.”
