The TTC is continuing its “Easier Access” program to install elevators in its rapid-transit stations, making the subway system accessible for everyone. The program supports the government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The provincial legislation commits the TTC to achieving a barrier-free transit system by 2025.
At Lawrence Station, the TTC is installing elevators to improve passenger safety and convenience. This upgrade includes hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, structural and architectural components.
At the end of the project, the TTC will provide passengers a barrier-free path to all levels of the station. Crews are installing:
- Two new elevators that connect passengers from the station entrance to the bus terminal and subway levels;.
- New stairs from the platform to concourse level of the station;
- Better way-finding and signs throughout the station; and
- Accessible sliding doors at the main entrance and barrier=free doors throughout the station.
This weekend, from Saturday, April 22 until 4 a.m. Monday, April 24, the TTC is completely closing the station and bus terminal to accommodate crews who are completing major structural work at track level. (In fact, the TTC is also closing Line 1 between York Mills and St Clair stations this weekend.)
Construction equipment and trucks will be present on the driveways of #3080 Yonge Street and the George Milbrandt Parkette. Crews are demolishing infrastructure at track level in Lawrence Station. They’ll remove debris to a a drop-off dumpster within the George Milbrandt Parkette. Overnight work during the closure takes place exclusively i the station, minimally disrupting nearby residences and businesses. Overnight, construction vehicles will move along Yonge Street.
You may hear noise, feel vibration and or breathe in dust resulting from the the work.
Since the TTC is completely closing the station, buses don’t enter the terminal at Lawrence Station. Exit or board buses at street level.
