Broadview Avenue sewer construction: TTC detours, starting May 7

Update — Monday, May 8, 10:01 p.m.: In a post on his blog, local transit commentator Steve Munro advises that:

“Effective Monday, May 8… with the disappearance of the 503 Kingston Road car and its temporary replacement by the 505 Dundas, the TTC is now operating a supplementary bus service from Queen & Kingston Road to downtown via Queen and King from 7am to 7pm weekdays.

“A direct streetcar service will not be possible until work on the Queen Street Don Bridge finishes sometime this summer, but there is another wrinkle. In the summer, Queen east of Broadview will close for Metrolinx bridge work at the future Riverside Station on the Lake Shore East Rail Corridor forcing all streetcars to operate via Gerrard. In turn that cannot begin until water main and track work at Coxwell & Lower Gerrard completes.”

The extra buses operate westbound along the 504X King extra route and eastbound along the 501X Queen extra route.

Monday, May 8, City of Toronto contractors start a project to replace the sanitary sewer under

  • Broadview Avenue between Danforth and Withrow avenues.

Crews are mainly cleaning the interior of the sewer and installing a structural liner, which cures and forms a new sewer pipe within the current sewer. The contractors may have to excavate, but the contractors will mostly work by using maintenace hole on the street. Work zones may temporarily block traffic lanes.

Starting Sunday, May 7, the TTC is operating buses, instead of streetcars along this section of Broadview to accommodate the project. It’s detouring streetcars along these routes:

Route 505 cars operate along Queen Street East and Kingston Road, providing all-day, every-day streetcar service along Kingston for the first time in many years.

505_BP_May7.gif

By diverting streetcars along the 505 Dundas route, the TTC also affects service along these routes:

  • 22 Coxwell; and
  • 503 Kingston Rd.

The TTC continues to replace streetcars with buses along the 304 King overnight route. The buses operate along their regular path through the work zone (for now).

This phase of sewer construction and the resulting TTC detours continue until June 17. Contractors return to complete the project from November, 2023 until February.

Starting Sunday, June 18, the TTC intends to remove all transit service from Broadview between Danforth and Gerrard Street East to accommodate its project to replace the streetcar tracks. It will revise the detours for streetcars along the 504 King and 505 Dundas routes, but it won’t be operating shuttle buses to replace the cars. That same day, it also starts a project to expand the streetcar loop in the terminal at Broadview Station. For that project, it will detour all buses that usually operate through the station.

The City previously closed Broadview between Danforth and Gerrard East to install a new water main in 2021.

This year, the City of Toronto and the TTC have started a series of major construction projects that significantly impact transit services in the east end of the former Toronto city — between Victoria Park Avenue and the Don River.

The various projects include:
