Starting Sunday, May 7, the City of Toronto is closing
- the intersection of Coxwell Avenue with (lower) Gerrard Street East / Eastwood Road.
The City is replacing the 112-year-old water main that extends east-west under Gerrard East.
Completing this project will bring the infrastructure to a state of good repair. The project is part of the 2023 Capital Works Program, which City Council approved Wednesday, February 15.
During phase 1A of the project, the work zone blocks traffic lanes on the northwest corner of the intersection. During phase 1B, the work zone blocks lanes on the southwest corner. During both phases, crews maintain at least one lane to accommodate traffic in each direction. Pedestrian access is always available.
Starting Sunday, May 7, the TTC is detouring streetcars and buses along these routes to accommodate the construction:
Shuttle buses replace route 506 streetcars east of Broadview Avenue.
These detours also accommodate construction in Main Street Station.
During the first phases of the project, buses along this route continue to operate through the intersection:
- 22 Coxwell.
However, the TTC is also revising service along the route, which results (indirectly) from sewer construction on Broadview Avenue.
Buses along the 322 Coxwell overnight route via Kingston Rd overnight route continue to operate through the intersection during this phase of construction.
During phase 2, the TTC will replace the streetcar tracks, curves and switches. The TTC says the tracks are more than 25 years old and need renewing. To accommodate phase 2, starting “mid-June” — perhaps as early as Sunday, June 18 — the City will close the intersection to all traffic and the TTC will extensively detour or revise its services.
This year, the City of Toronto and the TTC have started a series of major construction projects that significantly impact transit services in the east end of the former Toronto city — between Victoria Park Avenue and the Don River.
The various projects include:
- Broadview Avenue between Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street East — rehabilitating the sewer and replacing the streetcar tracks;
- Broadview Station — upgrading the bus and streetcar platforms;
- intersection of (lower) Gerrard Street East / Eastwood Road with Coxwell Avenue — replacing the water main and renewing the streetcar tracks;
- Main Street Station — repairing the pavement and the concrete bus platform on the south side of the station;
- Queen Street East just east of DeGrassi Street — upgrading the rail overpass as part of Metrolinx’s Ontario Line subway project.
- Queen Street East at the Don River — upgrading the bridge.
See local transit commentator Steve Munro’s recent posts for details on how all these projects together disrupt transit in the east end:
