TTC revises routes and services, starting May 7

Update — Monday, May 8, 10:01 p.m.: In a post on his blog, local transit commentator Steve Munro advises that:

“Effective Monday, May 8, the TTC has restored late night service on Lines 1 Yonge-University-Spadina and 2 Bloor-Danforth to every six minutes, seven days/week. This will be done with extra trains to supplement the scheduled service. The change will be formally scheduled in a future update.

“Also, with the disappearance of the 503 Kingston Road car and its temporary replacement by the 505 Dundas, the TTC is now operating a supplementary bus service from Queen & Kingston Road to downtown via Queen and King from 7am to 7pm weekdays.

“A direct streetcar service will not be possible until work on the Queen Street Don Bridge finishes sometime this summer, but there is another wrinkle. In the summer, Queen east of Broadview will close for Metrolinx bridge work at the future Riverside Station on the Lake Shore East Rail Corridor forcing all streetcars to operate via Gerrard. In turn that cannot begin until water main and track work at Coxwell & Lower Gerrard completes.

“The additional subway service is made possible by an unexpectedly lower absentee rate among operators compared to budget. The TTC made a larger provision for covid-related sickness and finds itself with more available staff.”

Starting Sunday, May 7, the TTC says it’s “introducing new schedules on some routes to improve reliability along busy corridors, add seasonal service to key city attractions, better align capacity with ridership demand and accommodate construction across the city.”

In fact, although some improvements do appear in the list of routes that the TTC is revising, this list of service changes is not a good-news story. It’s the second half of a program of cutting back service that the transit agency began in March. We wrote then that “TTC passengers finally get to see the effects of the City of Toronto’s budget up close on the streets near their homes, schools and work places as they can expect to wait longer at bus and streetcar stops and subway stations for the next vehicle. Since the number of passengers using transit is less than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic, starting Sunday, March 26, the transit agency is decreasing service along… many… routes.”

The TTC says it’s decreasing the frequency of service “to improve service reliability” and to “match service with passenger demand”. Passengers riding buses, streetcars or trains can expect to wait longer at stops or in stations along these routes and lines:

  • Line 1 Yonge - University subway;
  • 19 Bay;
  • 32 Eglinton West;
  • 38 Highland Creek
  • 44 Kipling South;
  • 48 Rathburn;
  • 52 Lawrence West;

  • 131 Nugget;
  • 501 Queen;
  • 506 Carlton;
  • 512 St. Clair;
  • 905 Eglinton East express;
  • 927 Highway 27 express;
  • 938 Highland Creek express;
  • 985 Sheppard East express; and
  • 995 York Mills express.

Major construction projects affect service along many routes, often resulting in extensive detours. The TTC is adjusting the schedules for buses and streetcars along these routes and, by adjusting the schedules, the TTC may offer passengers more or less frequent service:

Shuttle buses operate to replace parts of most of the streetcar routes that construction affects.

Finally, some good news: the TTC is operating buses and streetcars along these routes with more frequent service, or has extended the path for the vehicles to new areas:

  • 20 Cliffside;
  • 22 Coxwell;
  • 47 Lansdowne;
  • 48 Rathburn;
  • 54 Lawrence East;
  • 62 Mortimer;
  • 64 Main;
  • 73D Royal York;
  • 79 Scarlett Road;
  • 80 Queensway;
  • 92 Woodbine South;
  • 102 Markham Rd
  • 113 Danforth;
  • 135 Gerrard;

  • 396 Wilson overnight;
  • 501 Queen;

Update — Monday, May 8, 10:01 p.m.: In a post on his blog, local transit commentator Steve Munro advises that:

“Effective Monday, May 8… with the disappearance of the 503 Kingston Road car and its temporary replacement by the 505 Dundas, the TTC is now operating a supplementary bus service from Queen & Kingston Road to downtown via Queen and King from 7am to 7pm weekdays.

Westbound buses for this extra service display “504 King to York” destination signs. Eastbound buses display “501 **Queen to Kingston Rd” signs.

Line 1 Yonge - University

Update — Monday, May 8, 10:01 p.m.: In a post on his blog, local transit commentator Steve Munro advises that:

“Effective Monday, May 8, the TTC has restored late night service on Lines 1 Yonge-University-Spadina and 2 Bloor-Danforth to every six minutes, seven days/week. This will be done with extra trains to supplement the scheduled service. The change will be formally scheduled in a future update.

“The additional subway service is made possible by an unexpectedly lower absentee rate among operators compared to budget. The TTC made a larger provision for covid-related sickness and finds itself with more available staff.”

The TTC is decreasing the frequency of service along the line every day, it says, to match service to passenger demand.

Westbound buses for this extra service display “504 King to York” destination signs. Eastbound buses display “501 **Queen to Kingston Rd” signs.

Westbound buses for this extra service display “504 King to York” destination signs. Eastbound buses display “501 **Queen to Kingston Rd” signs.

Transit agencies often interline buses along two or more routes with a common terminal to save resources — human resources (drivers) and physical resources (buses). For example, during construction in Main Street Station bus terminal, when an eastbound bus along the 87 Cosburn route arrives at Main Street and Danforth Avenue, it completes a round trip along the 64 Main route before continuing westward along route 87.
