College / Dovercourt track repairs: TTC detouring streetcars, operating buses, overnight, May 30 to June 1

Starting Tuesday, May 30, TTC crews are repairing rail and concrete for the streetcar right of way

  • on College Street between Dovercourt Road and Delaware Avenue.

Crews work only in the track area to:

  • saw-cut the old concrete;
  • break and remove the old concrete;
  • replace the old rail with new rail; and
  • place new concrete.

Overnight, from 11 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 31 and from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday, June 1, the transit agency is detouring streetcars along this route around the work zone:

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Dundas Street West and Bathurst Street.

Since the TTC continues to operate buses, instead of streetcars along the 306 Carlton overnight route, it’s likely that the buses operate through the work zone and don’t detour — even though the map indicates otherwise.

The TTC explains that, “Rail work of this nature is required around the clock to ensure the quality installation of new rail and concrete. Concrete breaking/removal work will typically end at 11 p.m. Expected overnight activities include rail welding and placing new concrete.”

The crew will pour concrete into the track area and set it to cure. The new concrete requires curing time before the crew can remove the work zone and all traffic can resume using the entire roadway.

The work zone restricts traffic on College Street to just one lane in each direction. To help maintain the flow of traffic, the City of Toronto is temporarily prohibiting on-street parking near the work zone. The work zone may also block left turns onto or off of College. “Paid-duty” Toronto Police Service officers or traffic-control personnel may direct traffic near the work zone, when necessary.
