This weekend, Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4, the TTC is closing part of Line 2 Bloor - Danforth subway between Kennedy and Victoria Park stations. All Line 2 trains operate only between Victoria Park and Kipling stations this weekend.
Replacement shuttle buses operate to partially replace subway service. The buses stop on the street near each station on the closed section of the line. (Or consider a shuttle-bus alternative.) TTC staff will be available to direct passengers to shuttle-bus stops which vary from station to station. All stations will remain open so that passengers can access buses, buy fares and to connect to Line 3 Scarborough trains.
Wheel-Trans is available from any station throughout the weekend. Ask any TTC staff member for more information about Wheel-Trans service and frequency.
While this section of Line 1 is closed, TTC crews are preparing for future work on the Automatic Train Control (ATC) signal system.
The TTC says that “Portions of the previous signalling system dated back [to the 1960s when this part of the subway line] first opened. The implementation of ATC represents an important step forward in modernizing Canada’s busiest subway system and is essential to providing the best service possible for our [passengers].”
According to a TTC news release, “While the TTC does most subway maintenance at the conclusion of service each night, it continues to require weekend and early weeknight closures to complete critical infrastructure and state of good repair work as well as ATC signal upgrades.”
Shuttle buses
(We’ve based this section of the post on information the TTC has supplied during previous occasions when it closed this section of Line 2. Note that this is unofficial information. The TTC may operate with a different service pattern during this closure.)
Westbound buses start their trips in Kennedy Station bus terminal, then proceed:
westward along Transway Crescent;
southward along Kennedy Road;
westward along St. Clair Avenue East;
south- and westward through Warden Station bus terminal;
southward along Warden Avenue;
southwestward along Danforth Road;
westward along Danforth Avenue;
northward along Victoria Park Avenue;
eastward along Denton Avenue; and then
northward into Victoria Park Station bus terminal,
ending their trips.
Eastbound buses start their trips in Victoria Park Station bus terminal, then proceed:
southward along Victoria Park Avenue;
eastward along Danforth Avenue;
northeastward along Danforth Road;
northward along Warden Avenue;
east- and northward** through Warden Station bus terminal;
eastward along St. Clair Avenue East;
northward along Kennedy Road; and then
eastward along Transway Crescent into Kennedy Station bus terminal,
ending their trips.
Shuttle-bus alternatives
One way that you can reduce the impact of the closure is by planning ahead, leaving earlier than usually and giving yourself more time to get to where you’re going.
Although shuttle buses replacing subway service will be frequent, they may also be crowded.
Regular TTC buses and streetcars provide less frequent, less direct, but, perhaps, less stressful alternatives.
Consider boarding regular TTC buses between subway stations on the closed section of the line and stations on open sections as a way to bypass the shuttle buses entirely.
Board:
- buses along the 12B Kingston Rd or 20 Cliffside routes between Kennedy and Victoria Park stations;
- buses along the 113 Danforth route between Kennedy and Main Street stations; and
- buses along the 135 Gerrard route between Warden and Main Street Stations.
