*Update — Construction to replace the streetcar tracks on Broadview between Danforth and Gerrard East starts Tuesday, July 4. The TTC is revising detour routings.
Sunday, June 11, TTC track crews start early work on a project to replace the streetcar tracks on Broadview Avenue by delivering rail and material to the site.
By 7 a.m. Monday, June 12, they start welding standard lengths of rail into longer strings to speed up the process of installing the tracks and reduce the timeline that construction disrupts local communities. They’ll weld the rails in the centre lanes of the roadway between Victor Avenue and Gerrard Street East and on the west side of the roadway between Langley and Victor Avenues until Monday, June 19. After June 19, they’ll store the long rail strings in the centre lanes between north of Simpson Avenue / Jack Layton Way to Gerrard Street East and deplete the rail pile as they progress with the project.
Crews weld the rails daily from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Some overnight activity will occur, such as when crews move rail into position and deliver equipment and materials to support daytime welding operations.
The work zone blocks the centre lanes, restricting traffic in both directions to the curb lanes and preventing left turns onto and off of Broadview. It particularly blocks vehicles from turning left from northbound Broadview onto westbound Jack Layton Way, requiring the TTC to temporarily detour buses along this route:
- 121 Esplanade - River.
It’s already detouring streetcars along these routes due to the earlier sewer construction on Broadview:
Shuttle buses replace the cars north of Dundas Street East.
Buses continue to replace streetcars along the 304 King overnight route. The buses operate along the regular path for route 304 vehicles.
The TTC must complete this preliminary work before its crews can renew the tracks. Starting Monday, June 19, crews work to update the overhead streetcar wiring. To accommodate this next phase of construction, the TTC will cancel all service on Broadview between Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street East, starting Sunday, June 18. The TTC expects to start renewing the tracks Tuesday, July 4.
The Broadview Avenue streetcar-track replacement project will bring the track infrastructure to a state of good repair. Contractors will also resurface the roadway and repair sidewalks and curbs in the area as part of the project.
This year, the City of Toronto and the TTC have started a series of major construction projects that significantly impact transit services in the east end of the former Toronto city — between Victoria Park Avenue and the Don River.
The various projects include:
- Broadview Avenue between Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street East — rehabilitating the sewer and replacing the streetcar tracks;
- Broadview Station — upgrading the bus and streetcar platforms;
- intersection of (lower) Gerrard Street East / Eastwood Road with Coxwell Avenue — replacing the water main and renewing the streetcar tracks;
- Main Street Station — repairing the pavement and the concrete bus platform on the south side of the station;
- Queen Street East just east of DeGrassi Street — upgrading the rail overpass as part of Metrolinx’s Ontario Line subway project.
- Queen Street East at the Don River — upgrading the bridge.
See local transit commentator Steve Munro’s recent posts for details on how all these projects together disrupt transit in the east end:
