(Lower) Gerrard Street East / Coxwell Avenue streetcar-track construction: TTC revising detours, starting June 18

The City and TTC are replacing the aging streetcar tracks, curves and switches at

the intersection of (Lower) Gerrard Street East / Eastwood Road with Coxwell Avenue.

The tracks are more than 25 years old and need upgrading.

Starting Tuesday, June 20, the City is closing

(Lower) Gerrard Street East between Coxwell Avenue and 50 metres west of Coxwell and
Coxwell Avenue between 50 metres north and 50 metres south of Gerrard East / Eastwood Road.

to accommodate construction.

Starting Sunday, June 18, the TTC is detouring bus and streetcar services along multiple routes while the streets are closed:

22 Coxwell;
31 Greenwood;
306 Carlton overnight;
322 Coxwell overnight.
503 Kingston Rd;
505 Dundas;
506 Carlton.

Streetcar-track construction and the road closures continue until July 8. TTC detours may continue as late as until July 29.

This year, the City of Toronto and the TTC have started a series of major construction projects that significantly impact transit services in the east end of the former Toronto city — between Victoria Park Avenue and the Don River.

The various projects include:

Broadview Avenue between Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street East — rehabilitating the sewer and replacing the streetcar tracks;
Broadview Station — upgrading the bus and streetcar platforms;
intersection of (lower) Gerrard Street East / Eastwood Road with Coxwell Avenue — replacing the water main and renewing the streetcar tracks;
Main Street Station — repairing the pavement and the concrete bus platform on the south side of the station;
Queen Street East just east of DeGrassi Street — upgrading the rail overpass as part of Metrolinx’s Ontario Line subway project.
Queen Street East at the Don River — upgrading the bridge.

The TTC is detouring streetcars east of Broadview Avenue. Shuttle buses replace the cars between Main Street Station and Broadview.

“In mid-June”, during the next phase of construction at the intersection of [lower] Gerrard Street East / Eastwood Road with Coxwell Avenue, the TTC will extensively revise this routing.

306 Carlton overnight

The TTC continues to replace streetcars with buses along the entire route. Starting Monday, June 19, it detours the buses around the construction at Gerrard East / Coxwell.

Westbound buses start their trips in Victoria Park Station bus terminal, then proceed:

southward along Victoria Park Avenue; and then
eastward along Gerrard Street East to Main Street,
resuming the regular path for route 306 vehicles westward along Gerrard East.

They continue along the regular path to Gerrard and Coxwell, then detour:

northward along Coxwell;
westward along Danforth Avenue; and then
southward along Greenwood Avenue to Gerrard,
resuming their regular path westward along Gerrard.
