TTC project to replace streetcar tracks on Broadview Avenue: Overhead wiring upgrades, revised detours, starting June 18

*Update — Construction to replace the streetcar tracks on Broadview between Danforth and Gerrard East starts Tuesday, July 4. The TTC is revising detour routings.

Monday, June 19, TTC crews start upgrading the overhead streetcar wiring to prepare for the upcoming track-replacement project

  • on Broadview Avenue between north of Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street East.

The crews work nightly from 10:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. They use two to three overhead trucks with hydraulic equipment to complete this phase of the project. You may hear beeping sounds from back-up alarms on the TTC trucks or see bright equipment lights.

The work zone blocks the centre lanes, restricting traffic in both directions to the curb lanes and preventing left turns onto and off of Broadview.

The TTC must complete this preliminary work before its crews can renew the tracks. To accommodate this next phase of construction, the TTC is cancelling all service on Broadview between Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street East and making other changes to its services, starting Sunday, June 18. The TTC expects to start renewing the tracks Tuesday, July 4.

The Broadview Avenue streetcar-track replacement project will bring the track infrastructure to a state of good repair. Contractors will also resurface the roadway and repair sidewalks and curbs in the area as part of the project.

Starting June 18, the TTC is detouring or revising service along these routes:

  • 8 Broadview;
  • 62 Mortimer;
  • 70 O’Connor;
  • 72 Pape;
  • 87 Cosburn;
  • 100 Flemingdon Park;
  • 121 Esplanade - River;
  • 304 King overnight;
  • 322 Coxwell overnight;
  • 501B Queen shuttle buses;

  • 503 Kingston Rd;

Sunday, June 11, TTC crews started storing and welding rail to prepare for the streetcar track-replacement project.

This year, the City of Toronto and the TTC have started a series of major construction projects that significantly impact transit services in the east end of the former Toronto city — between Victoria Park Avenue and the Don River.

The various projects include:

See local transit commentator Steve Munro’s recent posts for details on how all these projects together disrupt transit in the east end:

Transit agencies often interline buses along two or more routes with a common terminal to save resources — human resources (drivers) and physical resources (buses). For example, when a westbound bus along the 8 Broadview route arrives in Broadview Station terminal, it continues eastbound along the 62 Mortimer route. It completes a round trip along route 62 before returning to the terminal and then proceeding northward along route 8.
