Streetcars return to (lower) Gerrard East, starting July 17



With the end of the streetcar-track renewal project at Coxwell and Gerrard East, the TTC is restoring streetcars to a section of [lower] Gerrard East. Starting Monday, July 17, streetcars along this route resume service between Coxwell and Broadview avenues:

Shuttle buses serve passengers travelling to and from the area east of Coxwell and continue to operate between Victoria Park and Castle Frank stations.

Buses continue to replace streetcars along this route:

  • 306 Carlton overnight.

However, the buses continue to detour around the Coxwell / Gerrard construction, since the TTC continues to cancel service along the 22 Coxwell route. The transit agency also continues to extend the path for buses along this route to partially replace route 22 service:

  • 31 Greenwood.

Buses along this route also continue to detour:

  • 322 Coxwell overnight.

This year, the City of Toronto and the TTC have started a series of major construction projects that significantly impact transit services in the east end of the former Toronto city — between Victoria Park Avenue and the Don River.

506 Carlton

Starting Monday, July 17, streetcars resume service between Coxwell and Broadview avenues. Westbound cars start their trips in Woodbine Loop (northeast corner of Queen Street East and Kingston Road), then proceed:

eastward along Queen East; and then
northward along Coxwell Avenue to (lower) Gerrard Street East / Eastwood Road,
resuming their regular path westward along Gerrard East.

Westbound cars skip their regular stops

  • in Main Street Station bus terminal,
  • on Main Street at Danforth Avenue and (upper) Gerrard Street East
  • on (upper) Gerrard Street East at Dengate Road, across from Malvern Avenue and at Ted Reeve Drive, Main Street and Norwood Road, across from Glenmount Park Road, at Golfview and Woodbine avenues and Kingsmount Park Road, across from Bowmore Road and Beaton Avenue and at Coxwell Avenue and
  • on Coxwell Avenue at (lower) Gerrard Street East.

Westbound cars also no longer serve passengers their former detour stops

  • eastbound on Gerrard Street East at Broadview Avenue,
  • on Broadview Avenue at Mountstephen Street and Dundas Street East,
  • on Dundas Street East at Munro and River streets, across from Regent Park Boulevard and at Parliament Street and
  • on Parliament Street at Oak Street and Gerrard Street East.

Instead, westbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at new temporary stops

  • in Woodbine Loop,
  • on Queen Street East at Kingston Road and Coxwell Avenue and
  • on Coxwell Avenue at Dundas Street East, Robbins Avenue and Eastwood Road.

Shuttle buses replace the cars east of Coxwell Avenue.

Eastbound cars operate along their regular path to (lower) Gerrard Street East and Coxwell Avenues, then detour:

southward along Coxwell;
eastward along Queen Street East;
northeastward along Kingston Road; and then
eastward into Woodbine Loop,
ending their trips.

  • on (upper) Gerrard Street East beyond Coxwell Avenue, at Beaton Avenue, Bowmore and Kingsmount Park avenues, Woodbine and Golfview avenues, Glenmount Park and Norwood roads and Main Street,

  • in Main Street Station.

Instead, eastbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Coxwell Avenue across from Robbins Avenue and at Dundas and Queen streets east,
  • on Queen Street East at Eastern Avenue and
  • in Woodbine Loop.

Shuttle buses replace the cars east of Coxwell Avenue. Eastbound streetcar passengers may transfer to eastbound buses at stops on Gerrard Street East between Parliament Street and Greenwood Avenue.

306 Carlton overnight

The TTC continues to replace streetcars with buses along the entire route. Starting Monday, June 19, it detours the buses around the construction at Gerrard East / Coxwell.

Westbound buses start their trips in Victoria Park Station bus terminal, then proceed:

southward along Victoria Park Avenue; and then
eastward along Gerrard Street East to Main Street,
resuming the regular path for route 306 vehicles westward along Gerrard East.

They continue along the regular path to Gerrard and Coxwell, then detour:

northward along Coxwell;
westward along Danforth Avenue; and then
southward along Greenwood Avenue to Gerrard,
resuming their regular path westward along Gerrard.

Starting Sunday, May 7, the TTC operates buses, instead of streetcars along the 506 Carlton route east of Broadview Avenue. Starting Sunday, June 18, it detours the buses around the Gerrard East / Coxwell construction.

Westbound buses start their trips in Victoria Park Station bus terminal, then proceed:

southward along Victoria Park Avenue,
westward along (upper) Gerrard Street East;
northward along Coxwell Avenue;
westward along Danforth Avenue;
southward along Greenwood Avenue;
westward along (lower) Gerrard Street East;
northward along Parliament Street;
eastward along Bloor Street East; and then
northward into Castle Frank Station bus terminal,
ending their trips.

22 Coxwell

Saturday, June 17 is the last day (for now) that the TTC operates buses along the route.

Due to the construction, southbound route 22 buses no longer drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • in Coxwell Station bus terminal,
  • on Coxwell Avenue at Danforth Avenue, across from Earl Haig Avenue, beyond Hanson Street, across from Casci Avenue, at Fairford Street, Gerrard Street East, across from Robbins Avenue, at Dundas and Queen streets east and
  • on Eastern Avenue beyond Queen Street East.

TTC buses along other routes continue to serve passengers at some of these stops.

  • Coxwell Station: 31 Greenwood; 70 O’Connor, 404 East York community bus.
  • Coxwell at Danforth: 31 Greenwood.
  • Coxwell at Earl Haig, Hanson and Casci: 506C Carlton shuttle bus.
  • Eastern: 31 Greenwood.

The TTC is temporarily cancelling all service to the stops on Coxwell at Fairford, Gerrard East, Robbins, Dundas East and Queen East.

  • Coxwell at Eastern: 31 Greenwood.
  • Coxwell at Casci, Hanson, Earl Haig, and Danforth: 506C Carlton shuttle bus.
  • Coxwell Station: 31 Greenwood; 70 O’Connor, 404 East York community bus.

The TTC is temporarily cancelling all service to the stops on Coxwell at Dundas East Robbins, Eastwood and Gerrard East.

Since Monday, May 7, the TTC has temporarily cancelled the 22A (Victoria Park - Coxwell Stn via Kingston Rd) branch of the route. This service change resulted, indirectly, from construction on Broadview Avenue.

  • on Kingston Road at Dixon Avenue, Rainsford Road, Woodbine Avenue, Waverly Road, Lee Avenue, Southwood and Glen Manor drives, Beech Avenue, Scarborough Road and Victoria Park Avenue and

Due to the longer path during construction, the TTC no longer interlines buses at Bingham Loop with buses along the 324 Victoria Park overnight route. The TTC is also detouring the buses due to streetcar-track construction on Broadview Avenue.

31 Greenwood

The TTC is extending the path for buses along the 31B branch of the route so that they operate to and from Eastern Avenue beyond Queen Street East during all times. By extending the path, the TTC intends to partially replace service that buses along the 22 Coxwell route usually provide.

Starting Sunday, June 19, southbound buses operate along the regular 31B path to Eastern and Woodward avenues, then proceed:

eastward along Eastern;
northward along Coxwell Avenue; and then
eastward along Queen Street East to Kingston Road / Eastern Avenue,
ending their trips.

Southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Eastern Avenue at Woodfield Road,
  • on Coxwell Avenue beyond Eastern Avenue and
  • on Queen Street East at Kingston Road / Eastern Avenue.

Northbound buses start their trips on Queen Street East at Kingston Road / Eastern Avenue, then proceed:

southwest- and westward along Eastern;
northward along Leslie Street; and then
eastward along Queen East to Greenwood Avenue,
resuming their usual route northward along Greenwood.

  • on Woodward Avenue at Queen Street East and
  • on Dorothy Street at Greenwood Avenue.

Instead, northbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Queen Street East at Kingston Road / Eastern Avenue,
  • on Eastern Avenue at Woodfield Road, Knox Avenue and Leslie Street,
  • on Leslie Street at Queen Street East and
  • on Queen Street East across from Alton Avenue.
