You can use credit or debit cards to pay fares on the TTC, starting August 15

Starting Tuesday, August 15, you can use your credit or debit cards to pay TTC fares, including cards on a smartphone or smartwatch, by tapping them onto PRESTO fare-card devices.

Even though the TTC is the largest transit agency in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area, until Tuesday it’s also been the only agency where passengers couldn’t use personal cards to pay fares. You can also use credit or debit to pay fares on GO Transit, UP Express, Brampton Transit, Burlington Transit, Durham Region Transit, the Hamilton Street Railway, MiWay, Oakville Transit and York Region Transit.

You can still use cash or PRESTO cards to pay for your rides.

After a successful test run in 2020 on UP Express with credit cards, Metrolinx expanded the contactless-payment program to Brampton Transit, MiWay and Oakville Transit, starting Thursday, August 11, 2022. In January 2023, it expanded credit-card payment to most other area systems, except the TTC. As of January 11, 2023, 518,475 passengers have boarded using credit cards on these transit systems.

Tuesday, May 2, 2023, Metrolinx and PRESTO expanded the program to allow riders to use credit cards.

PRESTO has about 4.4 million active passengers.
