HSR revises routes and services, September 3: Highlights

September is on the calendar and that means that summer is ending and classes at secondary and post-secondary schools are starting. And, people are returning to workplaces after vacations.

All of the transit agencies in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area are making changes to their services over the next few days — some of them, including the TTC and Brampton Transit, are making fairly extensive changes. That requires us at Transit Toronto to put together a lot of information during a short time.

We’ve decided to temporarily publish only highlights of the changes so that readers can receive information while it’s still timely. Shortly afterward, we will fill in the details for each post so you can get our usual extensive look at the various changes the agencies are making.

Starting Sunday, September 3 the Hamilton Street Railway says that it’s improving service as part of year seven of the City of Hamilton’s Ten-Year Local Transit Strategy. According to the HSR, “These changes will ensure HSR continues to support growth, enhance connectivity, and improve our [passengers’] experiences while using transit.”

The HSR is:

  • introducing all-day Sunday express service along the 10 B-Line and 20 A-Line express routes, which means express service is available every day along the routes.
  • extending branches of the 5 Delaware route so that buses operate to and from King Street East and Highway 8 and Mount Albion Loop.
  • improving connections to and from Stoney Creek by extending the 55 Stoney Creek Central route to Winona Crossing (.pdf), and the 55A branch to the Stoney Creek Municipal Service Centre.
  • cancelling the 58 Stoney Creek local route. Buses along the 5 Delaware route replace the service.

The HSR is revising service along these routes: 1 King; 2 Barton; 3 Cannon; 4 Bayfront; 5 Delaware; 6 Aberdeen; 7 Locke; 8 York; 9 Rock Gardens; 10 B-Line express; 20 A-Line express; 21 Upper Kenilworth; 22 Upper Ottawa; 23 Upper Gage; 24 Upper Sherman; 25 Upper Wentworth; 26 Upper Wellington; 27 Upper James; 33 Sanatorium; 34 Upper Paradise; 35 College; 41 Mohawk; 51 University; 55 Stoney Creek Central; 56 Centennial; 58 Stoney Creek local; 99 Waterfront shuttle.

Transit agencies often interline buses along two or more routes with a common terminal to save resources — human resources (drivers) and physical resources (buses). For example, when some eastbound buses along the 10 B-Line express route arrive at Eastgate terminal, they continue beyond the terminal along the 55 / 55A Stoney Creek Central route. After completing around trip along route 55 / 55A, the bus returns to the terminal to complete a westbound trip along route 10.
