The TTC is renewing the streetcar-track infrastructure
- on Broadview Avenue north of Danforth Avenue,
- on Erindale Avenue east of Broadview and
- in Broadview Station terminal
“to maintain a state of good repair for long term streetcar operations.” Since July, the City of Toronto and the TTC have been renewing the track between Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street East.
On Broadview and Erindale, the TTC is replacing the rail and concrete and making local repairs in the track area. In the station terminal, the transit agency is renewing the streetcar tracks and the bus and streetcar platforms.
To complete the project, the TTC is detouring all buses and streetcars that usually operate to and from Broadview Station terminal.
Since Sunday, May 7, it’s diverted service along these routes due to the construction on Broadview south of Danforth:
Since Sunday, June 18, it’s also detoured buses along these routes due to the construction:
starting Monday, September 11, due to the Broadview Station construction, it’s further detouring buses along these routes:
The TTC also continues to extend the path and operate extra buses along this route to partly replace streetcar service along Broadview:
- 72 Pape.
Starting Monday, September 25, the City of Toronto is closing
- Broadview Avenue between Pretoria and Danforth avenues
to accommodate the project. The City is closing the street for “up to 30 days”, meaning as late as until October 25. Construction on Broadview Avenue and the resulting TTC detours continue “”until November”, meaning as late as until November 30.
To allow crews to replace the rails safely and efficiently, the City must fully close Broadview “for up to 30 days”. While the street is closed, they will excavate, remove old rail and concrete and install new rail and concrete.
They mostly excavate and remove concrete from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. However, the TTC explains that, “Other rail-related activities are required around-the-clock to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete. Expected overnight activities include rail welding/grinding, placing new rail and concrete.”
This year, the City of Toronto and the TTC have started a series of major construction projects that significantly impact transit services in the east end of the former Toronto city — between Victoria Park Avenue and the Don River.
The various projects include:
- Broadview Avenue between Danforth Avenue and Gerrard Street East — rehabilitating the sewer and replacing the streetcar tracks;
- Broadview Station — upgrading the bus and streetcar platforms;
- intersection of (lower) Gerrard Street East / Eastwood Road with Coxwell Avenue — replacing the water main and renewing the streetcar tracks;
- Main Street Station — repairing the pavement and the concrete bus platform on the south side of the station;
- Queen Street East just east of DeGrassi Street — upgrading the rail overpass as part of Metrolinx’s Ontario Line subway project.
- Queen Street East at the Don River — upgrading the bridge.
See local transit commentator Steve Munro’s recent posts for details on how all these projects together disrupt transit in the east end:

Transit agencies often interline buses along two or more routes with a common terminal to save resources — human resources (drivers) and physical resources (buses). For example, when a westbound bus along the 8 Broadview route arrives at the intersection of Broadview Avenue with Mortimer Avenue, it continues eastbound along the 62 Mortimer route. It completes a round trip along route 62 before returning to the Mortimer / Mortimer and then proceeding eastward along route 8.
