Update — Tuesday, October 1, 5:04 p.m.: Construction has ended, for 2024. Buses and streetcars resume their regular paths, starting Sunday, October 6.
Update — Friday, September 13, 8:13 p.m.: The TTC says that, in early August, crews completed restoration work, meaning: repairing sidewalks and resurfacing the roadway. In early September, crews began cleaning up the work area. By mid-September, the TTC will begin commissioning work, so regular (and safe) streetcar service can be restored [along] King Street West.
Starting Monday, September 16, it’s revising the detour for buses along the 63 Ossington route. Buses operate along King West between Atlantic Avenue and Dufferin Street.
Update — Friday, April 26, 6:57 p.m.: The City has announced that, “due to supply-chain challenges”, it can’t obtain the specialized material it require to replace the TTC streetcar track at the intersection of King Street West with Dufferin Street. It is deferring this part of the project until 2025. It will also replace the water main under King West between Close Avenue and Dufferin as part of the same 2025 construction project.
Sunday, February 18, the City of Toronto and the TTC start a project to upgrade the aging streetcar tracks
- on King Street West between Dufferin and Shaw streets.
The City will also replace the 146-year-old water-main in the same area.
The City is closing this section of King Street West to all through traffic. The TTC is detouring buses and streetcars along these routes to accommodate the construction:
Wheel-Trans services remain accessible in all areas where the work zone doesn’t block local traffic.
The early phases of the project don’t affect service along these routes in the nearby area:
- 29 Dufferin;
- 301 Queen overnight;
- 329 Dufferin overnight;
- 363 Ossington overnight;
- 929 Dufferin express.
(Updated — Friday, April 26, 6:57 p.m.)However, during a future phase of construction this summer, the City will extend the work zone to completely close the intersection of King West with Dufferin to all traffic and the TTC will revise its detours. During that phase of construction, the TTC will also detour buses along the 29 / 329 / 929 Dufferin routes.
Track and water-main construction on King Street West and the resulting TTC detours continue until “December 2024”, meaning as late as until December 31.
(Updated — Friday, April 26, 6:57 p.m.)The City and TTC expect construction to take place in five phases from February 20 until December 2024:
- Phase one: from late February until August - replacing the water main on King Street West between Dufferin and Shaw streets.
- Phase two: from mid-May until late June - renewing streetcar tracks on King West between Dufferin and Fraser Avenue.
- Phase three: from June until August - renewing streetcar tracks at the intersection of King with Dufferin.
- Phase four: from August until late September - renewing streetcar tracks on King between Fraser and Atlantic avenues.
- Phase five: from September until early December - renewing streetcar tracks on King between Atlantic and Shaw.
During phase one, the work zone will restrict the roadway to just one lane in each direction on King.
During phases two, four and five, the City is closing each section of King where crews are working to all traffic.
During phase three, the City is closing the King / Dufferin intersection to through traffic in all directions.
(Updated — Friday, April 26, 6:57 p.m.) The City and TTC expect to complete the project by November 2024.

(Updated — Friday, April 26, 6:57 p.m.) Crews excavate and remove concrete and rail during various times throughout the day. Most excavation activities take place from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. The TTC explains that “Around-the-clock (24/7) work during new rail installation by TTC crews is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete. Additional overnight rail work by TTC crews may consist of moving the new rail into position for installation.”
(Updated — Friday, April 26, 6:57 p.m.) During Phase 1, crews work from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., Mondays to Fridays and occasionally later evenings or weekends, if necessary.
During phase 2, crews work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They excavate and complete heavy-breaking from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. Concrete-breaking is the most disruptive activity and will typically lasts during just the first one to two days for each phase of the construction. The TTC explains that “Around-the-clock (24/7) work during new rail installation by TTC crews is required to preserve the integrity and quality of new rail and concrete. Additional overnight rail work by TTC crews may consist of moving the new rail into position for installation.”
Overnight rail work includes:
- moving new rail into position;
- installing new rail; and
