Scarborough subway extension - Scarborough Centre: GO, TTC detouring buses during McCowan / Progress bridge demolition, starting August 30

Metrolinx contractors have started building the Scarborough Subway Extension, extending the TTC’s Line 2 Bloor - Danforth northeastward through Scarborough to the intersection of McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue East.

Starting 8 p.m. Friday, August 30, the City of Toronto is closing

  • McCowan Road between Consilium Place and Triton Road

to accommodate contractors who are demolishing the bridge that usually carries traffic along Progress Avenue over McCowan. Eventually, they will be building a street-level intersection at McCowan / Progress as part of the future subway project. This work also aligns with the goals of the City’s Scarborough Centre Transportation Master Plan.

The City has already closed

  • Progress Avenue between Grangeway Avenue / Consilium Place and east of Corporate Drive

since Friday, July 12, while crews got ready to demolish the bridge.

Unofficially, the TTC is also likely detouring buses along this route:

Bridge demolition at McCowan / Progress and the resulting TTC detours continue until September 3 (5 a.m.).

(The TTC has not confirmed detour-routing information. We’ve based this part of the post on information the TTC supplied about the detour paths for other buses that usually operate along the closed section of McCowan Road. Note that this is unofficial information. The TTC may operate buses along a different detour path.)

From 8 p.m. Friday, August 30 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, westbound buses operate along their regular path to Triton and McCowan roads, then detour:

southward along McCowan;
eastward along Bushby Drive;
northward along Grangeway Avenue; and then
north- and westward along Consilium Place to McCowan,
resuming their regular path northward along McCowan.

Eastbound buses reverse the westbound detour path.

Buses in both directions drop off or pick up passengers at all stops.
