The TTC is continuing its “Easier Access” program to make the subway system accessible for everyone. This includes installing elevators and accessible doors and updating signs and wayfinding in stations. The program supports the government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
Although the provincial legislation committed the TTC to achieving a barrier-free transit system by 2025, it hasn’t completely met that goal. It continues projects to improve the accessibility of stations over the next few years. According to the TTC, 56 stations are now accessible, but it still has to make 16 more stations accessible. 15 stations are under construction.
Starting Sunday, January 5, the transit agency is revising its services to make sure passengers have accessible connections to the stations and areas around the stations, where it’s installing elevators. It’s introducing a new route and increasing the hours of service along two more:
- 13A Avenue Rd — Buses operate during all times that the subway is operating, including new late-evening service. The longer service hours improve accessibility for passengers travelling to and from Museum Station and area during construction.
- 97C Yonge — Buses operate along the 97C branch between Eglinton and Union stations during all times that the subway is operating, instead of just Mondays to Fridays during rush hours. The longer service hours improve accessibility for passengers travelling to and from Summerhill, Rosedale, College and King stations and area during construction.
- 149 Etobicoke - Bloor — Buses operate along this new route during all times that the subway is operating between Kipling and High Park stations. The new route improves accessibility for passengers travelling to and from Islington, Old Mill and High Park stations and area during construction.
