Update — Thursday, July 17, 5:06 p.m.: The TTC is revising the detour paths for buses along the routes, starting 7 a.m. Friday, July 18.
Starting Monday, May 5, the City of Toronto is closing
- Oakwood Avenue, northbound lanes, between Holland Park Avenue and Rogers Road
to accommodate contractors who are installing a new storm sewer system to collect, store and move storm-water (rain and melted snow) from the Fairbank - Silverthorn area to Black Creek. This project is part of a City program to help reduce the risk of future basement flooding. Once complete, the new storm-sewer system will help to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall and sewer back-ups for homes in the area.
Crews are:
- excavating the road and digging a trench to access and install the new sewers;
- replacing City-owned water service pipes that do not meet City standards from the sewer and water mains to private-property lines; and
- restoring all work areas with asphalt, concrete or grass when they’ve finished working underground.
They work in three phases:
- Phase 1: Oakwood Avenue between Rogers Road and Holland Park Avenue
- Phase 2: Intersection of Rogers Road and Oakwood Avenue
- Phase 3: Intersection of Oakwood Avenue and Holland Park Avenue.
The TTC is detouring buses along these routes, while the traffic lanes are closed:
Construction on Oakwood Avenue and the resulting TTC detours continue until September 8.
The City of Toronto and the Government of Canada are protecting against basement flooding in the Fairbank - Silverthorn community. The project improves infrastructure in three important ways:
- installing new local storm sewers;
- building a large storm trunk sewer (main tunnel); and
- installing inlet-control devices (ICDs) to manage storm-water flow to catch basins.
When the project is complete, the new infrastructure will help to reduce sewer back-ups and basement flooding for more than 4,645 homes and provide flood protection to a 140-hectare area.
The project is part of the Basement Flooding Protection Program, which Toronto City Council approved in 2021. The Government of Canada has committed $73.2 million for this project through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, a Canada-wide program to support large-scale infrastructure projects and help communities better manage the risks of disasters resulting from natural hazards. The City is providing the remaining funding of $250 million.
