Update — Sunday, August 17, 7:29 a.m.: The City is reopening the intersection to traffic, starting Monday, August 18. Buses again operate through the intersection. The TTC continues to detour streetcars.
Update — Thursday, July 17, 2:28 p.m.: The TTC is further revising the detour path to accommodate filming on King Street East at Toronto Street. The detour continues until 7 p.m. Saturday, July 19. The TTC again detours the buses for the same film shoot from 7 a.m. Sunday, July 20 until 11 p.m. Thursday, July 24.
Update — Monday, July 14, 11:40 a.m.: The TTC now says that the detours off of Yonge Street result from “water-main repairs.”
Update — Saturday, July 12, 1:38 a.m.: The TTC is revising the detour path during sinkhole repairs on Yonge Street. Eastbound buses now operate along King streets west and east, Toronto Street, Adelaide Street East and Jarvis Street.
Update — Friday, July 11, 7:52 p.m.: The TTC is advising passengers that, starting 5 a.m. today, Friday, July 11, it’s further detouring buses along the 304D,504C and 504D shuttle-bus routes during sinkhole repairs on Yonge Street south of King Street.
Update — Monday, June 2, 6:02 p.m.: The City has completely closed the intersection to all traffic, starting Monday, June 2. The TTC is revising the path so that buses detour around the intersection.
Update — Friday, May 16, 3:04 p.m.: The TTC has announced that streetcars along the 304 King overnight and 504 King route will continue to detour along Shaw Street, instead of Spadina Avenue, as they did during the emergency water-main repairs.
In a news release, the transit agency explains that, “To ensure the TTC is providing the best service possible during the King / Church intersection closure,” it’s making “a small adjustment to the 504 King streetcar diversionary routing.” The release continues:
“…As with all large-scale diversions, the TTC continues to monitor traffic conditions and service performance in real time and could make further changes as needed. Updates to signage and stop pole notices along the route will be made in the coming few days as the materials need to be printed and installed.”
Streetcars along all other routes continue to detour along Spadina. Buses along the 504D King shuttle route resume service to and from Wolseley Loop.
Update — Friday, May 16, 8:50 a.m.: The City has completed emergency water-main repairs and streetcars and buses have resumed their previous paths.
Update — Monday, May 12, 7:14 a.m.: The TTC is further detouring the cars due to emergency water-main repairs on King Street West at Walnut Avenue.
Sunday, May 11, the City of Toronto and the TTC start a project to renew the aging streetcar tracks
- at the intersection of King Street East with Church Street.
The City is also replacing the 142-year old water main at the intersection.
This project will restore the water-main and track infrastructure to a state of good repair and is part of the City’s 2025 Capital Plan, which City Council approved earlier this year.
The TTC is detouring streetcars along these routes, while a work zone blocks part of the intersection:
Shuttle buses replace the cars between Queen Street East and Spadina Avenue. The buses operate along three routes:
- 304D King overnight shuttle buses between Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital and Bathurst Street;
- 504C King shuttle buses between the Distillery District and Bathurst; and
- 504D King shuttle buses between Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital and Bathurst.
^ Map of TTC detours before May 16.
^ Map of TTC detours after May 16.
Construction on the first two phases of the project at King East / Church and the resulting TTC detours continue “until late June / early July”, meaning as late as until July 5.
Crews work on this project during four phases.
Phase 1 - May 12 until June
- The City’s contractor replaces the water main on the north, east and west sides of the intersection.
- At least one traffic lane is available in each direction on King Street East and Church Street.
Phase 2 - June until July
- The City’s contractor replaces the water main on the south, east and west sides of the intersection.
- At least one traffic lane is available in each direction on King Street East and Church Street.
Phase 3 - July until August
- The City’s contractor replaces and removes the water main at the intersection
- The work zone completely blocks the intersection to all traffic.
Phase 4 - August
- The City’s contractor and the TTC install new streetcar tracks at the intersection.
- TTC crews test the new streetcar tracks.
- Crews also replace the sidewalk and install tactile plates at the intersection.
- The work zone continues to completely block the intersection to all traffic.
Crews maintain sidewalk access during most of this project. If they have to close a sidewalk, they will establish temporary pedestrian detour routes with appropriate signs.
Crews also maintain access to businesses and properties.
TTC crews need to work “around the clock” (24hours per day, seven days per week) while installing new rail to preserve the integrity and quality of the new rail and concrete. Expect to hear noise and see lights from construction vehicles and machinery.
Before crews start installing the new rail during July and August, the TTC will deliver new rail overnight to ensure efficiency and safety during low-traffic times. They will store the new rail at or near the work zone.
As the project progresses, the crews will take new rail from the storage area to install at the intersection.
