Update — Saturday, July 12, 1:38 a.m.: The TTC is revising the detour path during sinkhole repairs. Eastbound buses now operate along King streets west and east, Toronto Street, Adelaide Street East and Jarvis Street.
Update — Friday, July 11, 7:52 p.m.: The TTC is advising passengers that, starting 5 a.m. today, Friday, July 11, it’s further detouring buses along the 304D,504C and 504D shuttle-bus routes during sinkhole repairs on Yonge Street south of King Street.
Sunday, May 11, the City of Toronto and the TTC started a project to renew the aging streetcar tracks
- at the intersection of King Street East with Church Street.
The City is also replacing the 142-year old water main at the intersection.
This project will restore the water-main and track infrastructure to a state of good repair and is part of the City’s 2025 Capital Plan, which City Council approved earlier this year.
Starting Monday, June 2, the City is closing the intersection to all traffic and the TTC is revising its detour plan during phase 2 of the project.
Since May 11, the TTC has detoured streetcars along these routes:
Shuttle buses have replaced the cars between Queen Street East and Spadina Avenue. The buses operate along three routes:
- 304D King overnight shuttle buses between Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital and Bathurst Street;
- 504C King shuttle buses between the Distillery District and Bathurst; and
- 504D King shuttle buses between the hospital and Bathurst.
Starting Monday, June 2, the TTC revises the paths so that the buses further detour around the work zone and full intersection closure.

Due to unexpected underground conflicts with utilities on the south side of King, the City is revising the work schedule. It’s relining, instead of replacing, part of the water-main to extend its service life.
To avoid delays to the project schedule, crews will complete water-main work and start replacing the streetcar tracks during the same time.
Phase 1 - May until June - COMPLETE
- Crews have replaced the water-main that extends under the north side of King Street East, east and west of Church Street.
Phase 2 - June 2 until mid-August
- Crews replace some parts and reline other parts of the water-main that extends under the south side of King East, east and west of Church.
- Crews replace the sections of water-main that extend under the the intersection (north and south side of King Street East) and remove the streetcar tracks at the intersection.
- Crews install new streetcar track at the intersection.
- Crews also replace sidewalks and install tactile plates.
Thorough both phases, crews maintain access to businesses and properties.
TTC crews need to work “around the clock” (24hours per day, seven days per week) while installing new rail to preserve the integrity and quality of the new rail and concrete. Expect to hear noise and see lights from construction vehicles and machinery.
Before crews start installing the new rail, the TTC will deliver new rail overnight to ensure efficiency and safety during low-traffic times. They will store the new rail at or near the work zone.
As the project progresses, the crews will take new rail from the storage area to install at the intersection.
