Emergency sinkhole repairs on Yonge Street affect TTC service, starting July 11



Update — Sunday, August 17, 7:29 a.m.: The City is reopening the intersection to traffic, starting Monday, August 18. Buses again operate through the intersection. The TTC continues to detour streetcars.


Update — Thursday, July 17, 2:28 p.m.: The TTC is further revising the detour path to accommodate filming on King Street East at Toronto Street. (Buses operated along Victoria, instead of Toronto, Street.) The detour continues until 7 p.m. Saturday, July 19. The TTC again detours the buses for the same film shoot from 7 a.m. Sunday, July 20 until 11 p.m. Thursday, July 24.


Update — Monday, July 14, 11:40 a.m.: The TTC now says that the detours result from “water-main repairs.”


Update — Saturday, July 12, 1:38 a.m.: The TTC is revising the detour path during sinkhole repairs. Eastbound buses now operate along King streets west and east, Toronto Street, Adelaide Street East and Jarvis Street.


The TTC is advising passengers that, starting 5 a.m. today, Friday, July 11, it’s further detouring buses along these routes:

  • 304D King overnight shuttle buses;
  • 504C King shuttle buses; and
  • 504D King shuttle buses.

The transit agency is detouring the buses because a sinkhole has opened

  • on Yonge Street, southbound lanes, south of King Street West.

City of Toronto crews are repairing and restoring the roadway.

The TTC is also detouring buses along these routes:

  • 97 Yonge; and
  • 320 Yonge overnight.

The transit agency has detoured streetcars off King streets east and west and buses have replaced the cars since Sunday, May 11 during streetcar-track and water-main construction on King Street East at Church Street. Starting Monday, June 2, the City closed the King East / Church intersection to all traffic, and the TTC started detouring the buses.

Emergency sinkhole repairs on Yonge and the resulting TTC detours continue until further notice.

Westbound buses operate along their June 2 detour path.

Starting Friday, July 11, eastbound buses operate along their June 2 detour path to King Street West and Bay Street, then further detour:

southward along Bay; and then
eastward along Front Street West to Yonge Street,
resuming their usual path eastward along Front East.

Eastbound buses skip their usual stops

  • on King Street West beyond Bay Street and
  • on Yonge Street at Wellington Street West.

Instead, eastbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Bay Street at Wellington Street West and
  • on Front Street West beyond Bay Street.

eastward along King East;
northward along Toronto Street;
eastward along Adelaide Street East; and then
southward along Jarvis Street to King,
resuming their regular path eastward along King.

Eastbound buses skip their June 2 detour stops

  • on King Street West beyond Bay Street and
  • on Yonge Street at Wellington Street West.

And they skip their temporary stops

  • on Bay Street at Wellington Street West and
  • on Front Street West beyond Bay Street.

Instead, eastbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on King Street West beyond Bay Street and
  • on King Street East beyond Yonge Street.

resuming their regular path eastward along King.

Starting Friday, July 11, southbound buses operate along their regular path to Yonge and King streets, then detour:

westward along King Street West;
southward along Bay Street; and then
eastward along Front Street West to just east of Bay,
ending their trips.

Southbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Yonge Street at Wellington and Front streets west and
  • on Front Street West [westbound] at Bay Street.

Instead, southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Bay Street at Wellington Street West and
  • on Front Street West [eastbound] beyond Bay Street.

(Unofficial) Northbound buses start their trips on Front Street West east of Bay Street, then proceed:

northward along Yonge Street to King Street East,
resuming their regular path northward along Yonge.

Northbound buses skip their regular stops

  • on Front Street West [westbound] at Bay Street and
  • on Bay Street at Wellington and King streets west.

Instead, northbound buses pick up passengers at a temporary stop

  • on Front Street West [eastbound] beyond Bay Street.

Starting Saturday, July 12, southbound buses operate along their regular path to Yonge and King streets, then detour:

westward along King Street West;
southward along Bay Street to Wellington Street West,
resuming their regular path southward along Bay.

Southbound buses skip their regular stop

  • on Yonge Street at Wellington Street West.

Instead, southbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at a temporary stop

  • on Bay Street at Wellington Street West.

Northbound buses operate along their regular path to Yonge and Wellington streets, then detour:

westward along Wellington West;
northward along Bay Street; and then
eastward along King Street West to Yonge Street,
resuming their regular path northward along Yonge.

Northbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops

  • on Wellington Street West at Bay Street and
  • on Bay Street at King Street West.
