The TTC is closing Line 1 Yonge - University subway between St Clair West and St Andrew stations earlier than usually, Monday, July 21 until Thursday, July 24. Line 1 subway trains operate only between Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and St Clair West stations and between Finch and St Andrew stations after 11 p.m. those evenings.
Shuttle buses partially replace subway service. The buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops near each station on the closed section of the line. TTC staff are available in each station to direct you to the shuttle-bus boarding and offloading locations.
(Or, consider a shuttle-bus alternative.)
Many stations on this section of Line 1 remain open, so you can load PRESTO fare cards, buy PRESTO tickets and connect to TTC buses, streetcars and Line 2 Bloor - Danforth subway trains. However, Dupont, Museum, Queen’s Park, St Patrick and Osgoode stations are closed.
While this part of Line 1 is closed, TTC crews are maintaining the tracks and upgrading stations. For example they are likely continuing to upgrade station tiles at Queen’s Park and St Patrick stations.
According to a TTC news release, “While the TTC does most subway maintenance after service each night, it continues to require weekend and early weeknight closures to complete critical infrastructure and state-of-good-repair work.”
Although shuttle buses are accessible, Wheel-Trans service is also available. Ask TTC Customer Service staff in each station for directions to Wheel-Trans.
The transit agency is closing this section of Line 1 twice more during July:
- Friday, July 25 — St George to St Andrew — close early — station work.
- Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27 — St George to St Andrew — station work.
Shuttle-bus alternatives
Plan your trips on the subway ahead of time to avoid stress and crowds. Leave extra time in your schedule and expect longer travelling times those days.
While shuttle buses operate frequently, they will be crowded.
Regular TTC buses and streetcars provide less frequent, less direct, but, perhaps, less stressful alternatives. Consider travelling along the University branch, instead of the Yonge branch, to and from downtown Toronto and avoid the shuttle buses entirely.
Ride buses or streetcars along routes serving streets north or south of the closure to reach stations on the University branch.
Consider boarding buses and streetcars at subway stations on the Yonge branch of the subway line, instead of the University branch. If you’re travelling from the west, keep riding your bus or streetcar until you reach a Yonge-branch station, instead of exiting at a University-branch station. This applies not just to the closed section of the subway, but to stations north and south of the closure, so you can avoid the University branch entirely.
North of the closed section of the subway, ride:
- buses along the 60 Steeles West route to Finch Station, instead of Pioneer Village Station; or
- buses along the 36 Finch West route to Finch Station, instead of Finch West Station.
- buses along the 84 Sheppard West route to Sheppard - Yonge Station, instead of Sheppard West Station;
- buses along the 96 Wilson or 165 Weston Rd North routes to York Mills Station, instead of Wilson Station; or
- buses along the 52 Lawrence West route to Lawrence Station, instead of Lawrence West Station.
- buses along the 14 Glencairn route to Davisville Station, instead of Glencairn Station;
- buses along the 32 Eglinton West route to Eglinton Station, instead of Eglinton West Station;
At the closed section of the subway, ride:
- streetcars along the 512 St Clair route to St Clair Station, instead of St Clair West Station;
- Line 2 Bloor - Danforth subway trains to Yonge Station, instead of St George Station;
- streetcars along the 506 Carlton route to College Station, instead of Queen’s Park Station;
- streetcars along the 505 Dundas route to Dundas Station, instead of St Patrick Station;
- streetcars along the 501 Queen route to the area of Queen Station, instead of Osgoode Station; or
- streetcars along the 504 King route to King Station, instead of St Andrew Station.
