Gerrard East bridge track repairs: TTC detours, starting August 18

Update — Thursday, August 21, 3:31 p.m.: The TTC is extending the path for the shuttle buses so that they operate to and from Main Street Station. It’s also revising the path for westbound cars. Detours now end at 4 a.m. August 29**.

Starting 4 a.m. Monday, August 18, the City of Toronto is closing

  • Gerrard Street East, centre lanes, from west of Blackburn Street / St. Matthews Road to east of River Street

to accommodate TTC crews who are repairing the streetcar tracks on the bridge carrying Queen East over the Don River, Don Valley Parkway and Bayview Avenue.

The transit agency is detouring streetcars along these routes, while the crews work in the streetcar right-of-way.

  • 306 Carlton overnight; and
  • 506 Carlton.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Coxwell Avenue and Parliament Street.

^ The TTC recently completed another rail-repair project at Gerrard East / Carlaw.

The TTC says that “These repairs are part of TTC’s preventative maintenance program to ensure safe and reliable streetcar operations.”

Crews work “around-the-clock to ensure quality installation of new rail and concrete.” They:

  • saw-cut concrete;
  • break and remove concrete;
  • replace old rail with new rail; and
  • place new concrete.

Overnight, they:

  • move new rail into position;
  • install the new rail; and
  • weld and grind the new rail.

Crews complete excavation and heavy breaking at various times during the day.

Expect to hear noise and see lights from construction activities.

Crews work only in the centre lanes on Gerrard East. Traffic will flow in the curb lanes.

To create safe a work zone, the City of Toronto may temporarily restrict on-street parking. The location of the work zone may prevent motorists from turning left onto or off of Gerrard. Crews maintain vehicular access to the Don Valley Parkway along River Street and to Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital.

“Paid-duty” Toronto Police Service officers and flag persons will be on-site to direct traffic. Pedestrians can access the area during the project.
