King East / Church construction: TTC streetcars resume service through the intersection, starting August 31

The TTC and the City of Toronto have completed their projects at

  • the intersection of King Street East with Church Street.

After successfully testing and commissioning the new streetcar tracks and overhead power systems, the transit agency is now ready to restore streetcar service along these routes through the intersection, starting Sunday, August 31:

  • 304 King overnight; and
  • 504 King.

The TTC again operates route 504 cars along two branches:

  • the 504A branch — between Dundas West Station and Distillery Loop; and
  • the 504B branch — between Broadview Station and Wolseley Loop (on the west side of Bathurst Street north of Queen Street West).

Note that the 504B branch is operating to and from Wolseley, instead of Dufferin Gate, Loop due to upcoming construction at the intersection of King Street West with Dufferin Street.

Buses replace streetcars along this route through the intersection, starting Sunday:

  • 503 Kingston Rd.

These buses supplement route 504A King service between Dufferin and Bathurst streets since the TTC is shortening the path for cars along the 504B branch. The buses loop in the west end along Mowat Avenue, Liberty Street and Fraser Avenue starting August 31 and continuing during the upcoming King West / Dufferin construction.

The TTC is cancelling service along this route, starting September 1:

  • 303 Kingston Rd overnight.

Buses and streetcars along the 301 Queen, 304 King and 322 Coxwell overnight routes continue to drop off or pick up passengers at former route 303 stops.

Since more passengers travel by transit during fall and winter, the TTC is restoring service along this route, after a summer break, starting Tuesday, September 2:

  • 508 Lake Shore.

Route 508 cars also operate through the King East / Church intersection, but start and end trips in Distillery Loop, instead of Broadview Station. They operate Mondays to Friday only during rush hours.

Buses no longer operate along these routes:

  • 304D King overnight (Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital - Bathurst);
  • 504C King (Distillery - Bathurst); and
  • 504D King (Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital - Bathurst).

During construction, the City of Toronto and the TTC completed a project to renew the aging streetcar tracks at the intersection.

The City also replaced the 142-year old water main.

These projects restored the water-main and track infrastructure to a state of good repair and were part of the City’s 2025 Capital Plan, which City Council approved earlier this year.

Construction at King East / Church and the resulting TTC detours started Sunday, May 11

The TTC further detoured the cars and extended the path for buses due to emergency water-main repairs on King Street West at Walnut Avenue starting Monday, May 12. The City completed emergency water-main repairs and buses and streetcars resumed their previous paths, starting Friday, May 16. However, the TTC announced that streetcars along the 304 King overnight and 504 King routes would continue to detour along Shaw Street, instead of Spadina Avenue, as they did during the emergency water-main repairs.

Starting Monday, June 2, the City completely closed the intersection to all traffic. The TTC revised the path so that buses detoured around the intersection.

Starting 5 a.m. Friday, July 11, the TTC advised passengers that, it was further detouring buses along the 304D,504C and 504D shuttle-bus routes during sinkhole repairs on Yonge Street south of King Street. Eastbound buses operated along King streets west and east, Toronto Street, Adelaide Street East and Jarvis Street.

Thursday, July 17, the TTC further revised the detour path to accommodate filming on King Street East at Toronto Street. (Buses operated along Victoria Street, instead of Toronto Street.) The detour continues until 7 p.m. Saturday, July 19. The TTC again detours the buses for the same film shoot from 7 a.m. Sunday, July 20 until 11 p.m. Thursday, July 24.

The City reopened the intersection to traffic, starting Monday, August 18. Buses again operated through the intersection. The TTC continued to detour streetcars.
