King West / Dufferin streetcar-track construction: TTC detours, starting September 28

Update — Saturday, November 8, 7:52 a.m.: Streetcars resume regular service through the intersection starting Sunday, November 9. Buses continue to replace streetcars along the 503 Kingston Rd route. The buses operate to and from Dufferin Gate Loop.

Update — Thursday, October 30, 7:08 a.m.: The City reopens the intersection to traffic Thursday, October 30. Buses resume service through the intersection. Streetcars continue to detour, while the TTC tests the new infrastructure.

This Sunday, September 28, the City of Toronto and the TTC start a project to replace the streetcar tracks, curves and switches

  • at the intersection of King Street West with Dufferin Street.

2025 - 09-28 - King - Dufferin construction.jpg

The project requires the City to completely close the intersection to all traffic starting 5 a.m. Sunday. The City says that “This work is required to bring City infrastructure to a state of good repair and is part of the Council- approved 2024 Capital Works Program.”

The TTC is detouring buses and streetcars along these routes, while the intersection is closed:

  • 29 Dufferin;
  • 304 King overnight;
  • 329 Dufferin overnight;
  • 503 Kingston Rd;
  • 504 King;
  • 508 Lake Shore; and
  • 929 Dufferin express.

Buses along the 402 Parkdale community route continue to provide limited service within Parkdale, operating along their regular path during construction. Wheel-Trans services remain accessible in all areas where local traffic can flow.

Streetcar-track construction at King West / Dufferin and the resulting TTC detours continue until “mid November,” meaning as late as until November 22.

During this project, crews excavate and remove the old streetcar tracks during various times throughout the day. They mostly mill and break concrete from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. The TTC says, “Crews will work around the clock (24/7) during the rail installation work phase to preserve the integrity and quality of the newly installed streetcar rail and freshly poured concrete.” Expect some overnight work and noise.

This July, City Council approved temporary transit priority measures (.pdf) (TPMs), supporting transit service once streetcars and buses start diverting around construction at the intersection.

The City expects streetcar and bus diversions to significantly increase transit-vehicle traffic along the diversionary sections of Queen Street West (between Roncesvalles Avenue / King Street West and Shaw Street) and Shaw Street (between Queen and King streets west).

The approved TPMs extend “No Stopping” prohibitions and restrict turns at the intersections of King West / Shaw and Queen West / Shaw. These changes should enhance service speed and reliability, while reducing delays for about 91,000 daily streetcar riders and 42,000 bus riders.

Also, to support the 29 Dufferin bus diversion, the City is either implementing or extending “No Stopping” prohibitions on certain streets in Liberty Village. The City explains that “These changes should facilitate bus turns and end-of-line operations.”

City crews started updating parking and traffic signs Thursday, September 18. After construction has ended, crews will restore parking and remove turn-restriction signs.

Last year, the City and TTC completed phase 1 of this project by upgrading the aging streetcar tracks

  • on King Street West between Dufferin and Shaw streets.

The City also replaced the 146-year-old water-main in the same area. Construction on both projects started Sunday, February 18, 2024. Construction ended ten weeks earlier than the City and TTC had planned and regular transit service resumed through the area Sunday, October 6, 2024.
