As part of its program to maintain the streetcar tracks in a state of good repair, the TTC is grinding the rail on several sections of its streetcar network that have developed some rail roughness. Rail grinding improves the condition of the rail surface to help reduce noise and vibration, extend the life of the rail and provide a smoother ride for passengers through those areas.
From 11 p.m. Tuesday, October 7 until 4 a.m. Wednesday, October 8 and from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday, October 9, TTC crews are grinding the rail
- on Queen Street East between Greenwood and Pape avenues.
Crews can only complete this work safely when streetcars are not operating and fewer motorists are driving on the street.
The transit agency is detouring streetcars along these routes, while crews operate the slow-moving rail grinder along the tracks:

The TTC continues to operate buses, instead of streetcars, along the 503 Kingston Rd route. The buses operate along their regular path through the work zone and don’t have to detour.

Overnight, from 11 p.m.Thursday, October 9 until 4 a.m. Friday, October 10 and from 11 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Saturday, October 11, the TTC detours cars along two different paths:

Eastbound cars operate along their regular path to Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue, then detour:
northward along Broadview;
eastward along Gerrard Street East; and then
southward along Coxwell Avenue to Queen East,
resuming their regular path eastward along Queen.Eastbound cars skip their regular stops
- on Queen Street East at Saulter Street, Empire, Logan, Carlaw, Pape and Caroline avenues, across from Jones Avenue, at Leslie Street, across from Alton and Greenwood avenues and at Woodfield Road and Emdaabiimok Avenue.
Instead, eastbound cars drop off or pick up passengers at temporary stops
- on Broadview Avenue at Dundas Street East, across from Mountstephen Street and at Gerrard Street East,
- on Gerrard Street East at DeGrassi Street, Logan, Carlaw, Pape, Marjory and Jones avenues, Leslie Street, Alton and Greenwood avenues, Woodfield Road and Coxwell Avenue and
- on Coxwell Avenue across from Robbins Avenue and at Dundas and Queen streets east.
Shuttle buses replace the cars between Broadview and Coxwell / Emdaabiimok avenues. Eastbound streetcar passengers may board eastbound buses on the south side of Queen Street East across from Carroll Street.
From 11 p.m. Friday, October 10 until 4 a.m. Saturday, October 11, westbound cars operate along their regular path to Queen Street East at Emdaabiimok Avenue / Coxwell Avenue, then detour:
northward along Coxwell;
westward along Gerrard Street East;

resuming their regular path westward along Queen.Westbound cars skip their regular stops

Westbound buses start their trips in Woodbine Loop (on the northeast corner of Queen Street East and Kingston Road), then proceed:
westward along Queen East;
southward along River Street; and then
eastward along King Street East to just east of Lower River,
ending their trips.Westbound buses drop off or pick up passengers at stops
- in Woodbine Loop and
- on Queen Street East at Kingston Road, Coxwell Avenue, Woodfield Road, Greenwood and Alton avenues, Leslie Street and Jones, Brooklyn, Pape, Carlaw and Logan avenues, beyond Booth Street and at Boulton and Broadview avenues and Carroll Street.
