Bathurst, Fleet and Queens Quay West "essential maintenance:" TTC detours, starting March 26



Update — Monday, April 6, 5:15 p.m.: Overnight from 11 p.m. Monday, April 6 until 4 a.m. Tuesday, April 7 and from 11 p.m. Tuesday until 4 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, the TTC further detours streetcars along the 511 Bathurst route. Shuttle buses replace the cars south of Queen Street West.


TTC crews are upgrading and maintaining infrastructure across the city to prepare for the FIFA World Cup. It says, “This work is necessary to ensure safe and reliable streetcar operations.”

Starting Thursday, March 26, crews are continuing their earlier project to upgrade streetcar infrastructure on Bathurst and Fleet streets and also start working on Queens Quay West.

The transit agency is revising service in the area.

It’s temporarily cancelling streetcar service along this route:

  • 509 Harbourfront.

But, it’s resuming streetcars along this route between Bathurst Station and Fleet Loop:

  • 511 Bathurst.

Shuttle buses replace streetcar service along the 509 Harbourfront route between Exhibition and Spadina / Queens Quay loops.

“Essential maintenance” on Bathurst and Fleet streets and Queens Quay West and the resulting TTC detours and service changes continue until April 9.


Specifically, TTC crews are working at several sites:

  • at the intersection of Queens Quay West with Dan Leckie Wayinspecting and maintaining streetcar infrastructure from Monday, March 30 until Wednesday, April 1;
  • at the intersection of Fleet Street with Ianuzzi Streetcabling from Tuesday, April 7 until Thursday, April 9;
  • Fleet between Strachan Avenue and Fort York Boulevard — updating the overhead wiring from Monday, March 26 until Thursday, April 9; and
  • Bathurst between Lake Shore Boulevard West and Queens Quay West — updating the overhead wiring from Monday, March 26 until Thursday, April 9.

A City of Toronto contractor is also repairing concrete curbs near the intersection of Bathurst with Lake Shore West Thursday, March 26 and Friday, March 27 and from Monday, March 30 until Thursday, April 2. As part of this work, the City is closing southbound traffic lanes on Bathurst at Lake Shore Thursday, March 26, Friday, March 27 and Monday, March 30. This closure allows crews to correct curbs near the streetcar tracks, which, the TTC explains, “are necessary to ensure proper vehicle guidance and maintain a safe separation between roadway traffic and transit operations.”


511 Bathurst

Starting 4 a.m. Thursday, March 26, the TTC resumes service along the route. However, until 4 a.m. Thursday, April 9, streetcars operate along their regular path from Bathurst Station, but only as far south as Fleet Loop — on the south side of Fleet Street across from Bastion Street.

Southbound cars skip their regular stops

  • on Fleet Street beyond Fort York Boulevard,
  • on Manitoba Drive beyond Strachan Avenue and
  • in Exhibition Loop.

Instead, southbound cars drop off passengers at a temporary stop

  • in Fleet Loop.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Exhibition and Fleet loops. Southbound streetcar passengers may board westbound buses on the east side of Bathurst Street south of Lake Shore Boulevard West.

Northbound cars start their trips in Fleet Loop, then proceed:

along their regular path eastward along Fleet.

Northbound cars skip their regular stops

  • in Exhibition Loop,
  • on Manitoba Drive at Strachan Avenue and
  • on Fleet Street beyond Fort York Boulevard.

Instead, northbound cars pick up passengers at a temporary stop

  • in Fleet Loop.

Shuttle buses replace the cars between Exhibition and Fleet loops.

509 Harbourfront

From 4 a.m. Thursday, March 26 until 4 a.m. Thursday, April 9, the TTC is cancelling streetcar service along the route. Shuttle buses replace the cars between Exhibition and Spadina / Queens Quay loops.

509 Harbourfront shuttle buses

From 4 a.m. Thursday, March 26 until 4 a.m. Thursday, April 9, shuttle buses replace streetcars along the 509 Harbourfront route between Exhibition and Spadina / Queens Quay loops. They also replace cars along the 511 **Bathurst route between Exhibition and Fleet loops. Passengers travelling between Spadina / Queens Quay Loop and Union Station may board streetcars along the 510 Spadina route.

Eastbound buses start their trips in Exhibition Loop, then proceed:

eastward along the Exhibition Loop access road, Manitoba Drive and Fleet Street;
southward along Fort York Boulevard;
eastward along Lake Shore Boulevard West;
southward along Bathurst Street;
eastward along Queens Quay West; and then
northward into Spadina / Queens Quay Loop,
ending their trips.

Eastbound buses likely drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • in Exhibition Loop,
  • on Manitoba Drive at Strachan Avenue,
  • on Fleet Street at Fort York Boulevard,
  • on Lake Shore Boulevard West at Bathurst Street,
  • on Queens Quay West beyond Bathurst Street, Dan Leckie Way and Lower Spadina Avenue and
  • in Spadina / Queens Quay Loop.

Eastbound bus passengers may board northbound streetcars along the 511 Bathurst route on the centre-road “island” streetcar stop on Fleet Street west of Bathurst Street. Eastbound bus passengers may board eastbound cars along the 510 Spadina route on the centre-road “island” streetcar stop on Queens Quay West east of Lower Spadina Avenue.

Westbound buses start their trips in Spadina / Queens Quay Loop, then proceed:

southward along Lower Spadina Avenue;
westward along Queens Quay West;
northward along Bathurst Street;
westward along Lake Shore Boulevard West and Princes’ Boulevard;
northward along Strachan Avenue;
westward along Manitoba Drive and the Exhibition Loop access road into Exhibition Loop,
ending their trips.

Westbound buses likely drop off or pick up passengers at stops

  • in Spadina / Queens Quay Loop,
  • on Queens Quay West beyond Lower Spadina Avenue and Dan Leckie Way
  • on Bathurst Street at Lake Shore Boulevard West,
  • on Princes’ Boulevard at Strachan Avenue,
  • on Manitoba Drive beyond Strachan Avenue and
  • in Exhibition Loop.
