[VIDEO]: Rest in Peace, Scarborough RT

It was three years ago this past Friday when the Scarborough RT came to a sudden and ignoble end, as a train derailed south of Ellesmere station, sending five people to hospital with minor injuries. The accident would shut down the line four months earlier than planned, as it was planned to be decommissioned, thanks to its age, lack of investment, and plans to expand rapid transit service elsewhere (including the Scarborough Subway Extension). Later this year, however, some of its right-of-way should see new life as a bus rapid transit roadway.

Despite its neglectful end, the Scarborough RT remains a cultural touchstone for many Scarborough residents. After all, it took thousands daily to and from home, work and shopping, so it’s been a part of many lives for over thirty-eight years. For some, it’s still hard to imagine it gone. That’s why Transit Toronto videographer Damian Baranowski put together the video above in memory of the Scarborough RT. Check it out to see what the stations and right-of-way looks like today, and remember the way the line used to be.
