2000 Service Plan - Recommended new and revised services

303 Don Mills -- Overnight service on Thorncliffe Park Drive

303 Don Mills -- Overnight service on Thorncliffe Park Drive

Origin of proposal: East York Community Council
City wards: East York
Time periods: Overnight, seven days a week.

It is recommended that the 303 DON MILLS overnight route be changed to operate on Thorncliffe Park Drive south of Overlea Boulevard, seven days a week. This change would make service better by reducing the distance that customers in the area need to walk to reach the nearest bus stop with 24-hour service.

Buses on the revised 303 DON MILLS route would operate on Thorncliffe Park Drive south of Overlea Boulevard, in both directions, bringing service closer to the apartments that are located in this area. Approximately 20 customer-trips each night would be made on the new part of the route. Service would be made worse for customers using the stops on Overlea Boulevard, between the east and west branches of Thorncliffe Park Drive, as they would have a longer walk to the nearest overnight bus stop. Approximately five customer-trips are made at these stops each night. Approximately 100 customer-trips would have additional travel time, as they would be carried along Thorncliffe Park Drive, instead of travelling directly along Overlea Boulevard.

The change in weighted travel time indicates that the benefit of a shorter walk is more important to customers than the inconvenience of a longer walk or a longer travel time. This change would be an overall improvement of service to customers, and it is therefore recommended.

This service change would be made with no increase in operating costs, and there would be no change to the scheduled operating interval between buses or scheduled trip times.

Outcome of proposal: implemented as proposed on February 13, 2000

131 Nugget -- Revised service on Morningview Trail

131 Nugget -- Revised service on Morningview Trail

Origin of proposal: Councillor Balkissoon
City wards: Scarborough Malvern
Time periods: Seven days a week

It is recommended that the north end of the 131 NUGGET route be revised, so that buses operate over an on-street loop using Morningview Trail, Littles Road, and Old Finch Avenue. The change would be made at all times that the route operates. The new routing would reduce the distance that customers need to walk to their nearest bus stop.

Before 3:00 p.m., seven days a week, buses would operate over the present route north on Morningside Avenue, and would then operate east and north on Morningview Trail, west on Old Finch Avenue, south on Littles Road, and west on Morningview Trail to Morningside Avenue. After 3:00 p.m., seven days a week, the looping would be reversed, and buses would operate east on Morningview Trail, north on Littles Road, east on Old Finch Avenue, and south and west on Morningview Trail to Morningside Avenue. The present off-street bus loop on Old Finch Avenue, just east of Morningview Trail, would no longer be used.

The change would make service better for customers on Morningview Trail who presently walk to 131 NUGGET stops on Littles Road or Old Finch Avenue. It is estimated that the new service on Morningview Trail would be used by approximately 330 customer-trips each day.

Some customers would have a longer travel time, as they would have to ride around the on-street looping. This inconvenience would be minimized by reversing the operation of the on-street loop at 3:00 p.m., so that the greater number of customers travelling in the busier direction have a more direct trip at all times. Approximately 235 customer-trips are made in the off-peak direction, and these trips would be made with a longer travel time.

The change in weighted travel time shows that the benefit of a shorter walk to the nearest stop is more important to customers than the inconvenience of longer travel time, and that, overall, the change would make service better for customers.

This change would be made without any additional operating costs.

TTC staff also examined two other proposals for changes to service on Morningview Trail and on Old Finch Avenue. In the first option, the 131 NUGGET route would be changed so that buses would operate east and north on Morningview Trail to the present off-street loop on Old Finch Avenue. The present 131 NUGGET service would be removed from Littles Road, and from Old Finch Avenue, east of Littles Road.

The change would make service better for customers who begin or end their trip east of Littles Road, by reducing the distance they have to walk to the nearest bus stop. The change would make service worse for some customers who begin or end their trip at stops on Littles Road or on Old Finch Avenue, as they would have a longer walk to their nearest bus stop. The change in weighted travel time shows that the inconvenience of this service is more important to customers than the benefits, and that the change would cause an overall inconvenience for customers. For this reason, it was not recommended.

The second option was to change the 131 NUGGET route to remove service from Old Finch Avenue, east of Littles Road, and operate the route instead on the western portion of Old Finch Avenue, west of Littles Road. Buses would operate north on Littles Road and west on Old Finch Avenue to the off-street loop used by the 116 MORNINGSIDE route at Morningside Avenue, just north of Old Finch Avenue.

The revised route would reduce the walking distance to the nearest bus stop for some customer-trips which are made west and north of Old Finch Avenue. The change would make service worse for customers who presently use 131 NUGGET service on Old Finch Avenue, east of Littles Road as they would have a longer walk to the revised routing at the Old Finch Avenue/Littles Road stop.

The change in weighted travel time shows that the inconvenience of this service change is more important to customers than the benefits, and that the change would cause an overall inconvenience for customers. For this reason, it was not recommended.

Status of proposal: Implemented with the February 13, 2000 service changes.

72 Pape and 121 Front-Esplanade -- Revised service on Mill Street

72 Pape and 121 Front-Esplanade -- Revised service on Mill Street

Origin of proposal: May 20, 1999, public meeting
City wards: Don River, Downtown
Time periods: Monday-Friday, peak periods and midday

It is recommended that the 72 PAPE and 121 FRONT-ESPLANADE routes be changed to operate in both directions on Mill Street and Cherry Street, north of Lake Shore Boulevard. The route change would improve service by reducing the distance that customers need to walk to or from their nearest eastbound bus stop. The change would bring two-way service to Mill Street, which is the site of significant new residential developments on the old railway lands.

Westbound buses on these two routes now operate north on Cherry Street and west on Mill Street, and eastbound buses operate south on Parliament Street and east on Lake Shore Boulevard. With this change, both routes would operate on Cherry Street and Mill Street in both directions, and service would be removed from the section of Parliament Street south of Mill Street and from the section of Lake Shore Boulevard between Parliament Street and Cherry Street.

The 121 FRONT-ESPLANADE route operates through this area during the peak periods, and the 72 PAPE route operates through this area during the midday from Monday to Friday. Beginning in mid-2000, as part of the changes associated with the new 509 HARBOURFRONT streetcar route (described in Section 4 of this report), service on Mill street during both the peak periods and the midday from Monday to Friday will be provided by the 72 PAPE route.

The routing change would make service better for approximately ten customer-trips each day, which would be made with a shorter walk to the nearest eastbound bus stop (the number of customers who would benefit from this change will increase, as the new residential development in the area is built and occupied over the next year). The change would make service worse for some customers who now use the bus stop at Parliament Street, just north of Lake Shore Boulevard, which would be removed. Approximately five customer-trips each day would be made with a longer walk to the nearest bus stop.

The change in weighted travel time indicates that the benefit of this service change is more important to customers than the inconvenience, and that, overall, the change would make service better for customers.

The service change would be made with no increase in operating costs, and there would be no change to the scheduled interval between buses of the scheduled trip times.

Status of Proposal: implemented as proposed on February 13, 2000.

Pearson Airport -- New service from Kipling Station

Origin of proposal: Public meeting, May 20, 1999 City ward: Markland-Centennial, Rexdale-Thistletown
Time periods: Monday to Friday, peak periods and midday

It is recommended that a new direct service be operated between Pearson Airport and Kipling Station on the Bloor-Danforth Subway during the peak periods and midday from Monday to Friday. The change would improve service by reducing the number of transfers which must be made by customers.

The new service would operate between Kipling Station and Pearson Airport, during the peak periods and midday from Monday to Friday. Buses would operate from Kipling Station, north on Aukland Road, west on Dundas Street, north on Highway 427, and then west into Pearson Airport. Buses would serve the arrivals level of Terminal 3 and Terminal 2, and would then return to Kipling Station via Highway 427, Dundas Street, and Aukland Drive. Buses would serve bus stops only at Kipling Station, Dundas Street/The East Mall, and at the two airport terminals.

It is projected that approximately 310 customer-trips would be made on the new service each day. Approximately 120 of these trips would be new to the TTC, and the remainder of these trips would be made by customers who are now using other nearby service but would choose to use the new route in preference to their current service.

One bus would be required to provide this service, and so a financial assessment was carried out. The comparison of the operating costs with the projected increase in ridership indicates that the service would meet the TTC's financial standard, and it is therefore recommended.

TTC staff also evaluated operating this new service during the evenings and on weekends. A financial assessment indicates that the service at these times would not meet the TTC's financial standard, and it is therefore not recommended.

Status of Proposal: implemented as proposed on February 13, 2000, but delayed for one day at the request of the Greater Toronto Airport Authority. It was in service starting February 15, 2000. There is some controversy surrounding this route as the higher-cost, privately run Pacific Western service parallels this route, operating from Islington station.

80 Queensway -- Increased service levels

Origin of proposal: Etobicoke Community Council
City ward: Lakeshore-Queensway
Time periods: Seven days a week

It is recommended that service increases be made on the 80 QUEENSWAY route as necessary in response to continuing development in the Queensway and Islington Avenue area.

Etobicoke Community council requested that service be increased on this route to accommodate the increased demand from nearby new developments, principally a cinema complex which is planned for the area.

TTC staff collect ridership counts and monitor overcrowding and the quality of service on all routes continuously, and make service changes when required, in response to operating conditions and changes in customers' travel needs. When buses are found to be crowded in excess of the TTC's vehicle loading standards, service increases are made to reduce the interval between buses. Changes can also be made to the start and finish times of service or the scheduled trip times when early-morning or late-evening ridership is high enough.

A review of the most-recent available ridership counts on the 80 QUEENSWAY route shows that the service is not presently overcrowded. The last trip in the evening on this route was examined, and ridership on this trip was found to be not high enough to require a later trip.

In addition to the 80 QUEENSWAY route, the 110 ISLINGTON SOUTH and 311 ISLINGTON routes provide 24-hour service on Islington Avenue at the Queensway. The majority of the customer-trips which are made in the evening at the Islington/Queensway intersection are made on the 110 ISLINGTON SOUTH route. A review of the ridership of the ridership on the 110 ISLINGTON SOUTH route shows that the average number of customers per bus is within the TTC's vehicle loading standards, and that additional capacity is available on this route to accommodate increased ridership from the area.

As with all service changes in response to crowding, these service changes would be made through a re-allocation of resources from other routes, within the operating budget at the time they are required.

73 Royal York -- Revised looping at Dixon Road

Origin of proposal: Councillor Giansante
City Ward: Kingsway-Humber
Time periods: Saturday, Sunday and holiday evenings

It is recommended that the routing of the 73A ROYAL YORK (Royal York stn-Dixon Rd) service be changed after 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and after 7:00 p.m. on Sundays and holidays so that buses turn around at the north end of the route by using Dixon Road, Scarlett Road, and Lawrence Avenue. The change would make service better by reducing waiting time for customers travelling to the subway.

Buses on the 73A ROYAL YORK service during the evening on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays would run north on Royal York Road, east on Dixon Road, south on Scarlett Road, west on Lawrence Avenue, and south on Royal York Road. The current service, with buses turning back to Royal York Road by running south from Dixon Road on Roxaline Street, and then west on Royaleigh Avenue, would be eliminated on Saturday, Sunday and holiday evenings.

The change would make service better for customers on Dixon Road, Scarlett Road, and Lawrence Avenue, by reducing waiting time at the bus stops on this section of the route, and by providing new direct service to the Bloor-Danforth subway. Approximately five customers each Saturday and Sunday evening would have a shorter waiting time for the bus. No customers would have a worse service, as no customer-trips begin or end on Roxaline Street or Royaleigh Avenue on Saturday or Sunday evenings. The change would be an overall improvement in service for customers, and is therefore recommended.

Two additional options for changing the north-end looping of this route were examined. The first option was an extension of the route during the evenings on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays to Wilson Avenue. The second option was to change the peak-period service on the 73A ROYAL YORK branch to operate on Dixon Road, Scarlett Road, and Lawrence Avenue, as is recommended on Saturday, Sunday and holiday evenings. One additional bus would be required for each of these two options, and so financial assessments were carried out. The comparison of the operating costs with the projected increase in ridership indicates that both service changes would not meet the TTC's financial standard, and these changes were therefore not recommended.

Status of Proposal: implemented as proposed on February 13, 2000.

312 St Clair -- Overnight service to Jane Station

Origin of proposal: TTC staff
City wards: Davenport, High Park, Midtown
Time periods: Overnight, seven days a week

It is recommended that the 312 ST CLAIR overnight route be extended to serve Jane Station, in order to reduce the distance that customers in the area need to walk to reach their nearest bus stop with overnight service.

Streetcars on the 312 ST CLAIR route now operate to Gunn's Loop on St. Clair Avenue, west of Keele Street. With this change, buses would replace streetcars between 1:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., and would operate west on St. Clair Avenue and south on Jane Street to Jane Station. Buses would turn at Jane Station and return north on Jane Street and east on St. Clair Avenue. The change would require no additional costs as there is sufficient time in the present schedules to cover the additional distance travelled.

Because the change would provide new overnight service to customers on St. Clair Avenue west of Keele Street and on Jane Street between St. Clair Avenue and Bloor Street, would attract new customers to the TTC, and would do so with no increase in operating costs, the proposal is recommended.

Status of Proposal: implemented as proposed on March 19, 2000, despite the concerns raised by a few citizens over the removal of overnight streetcar service on St. Clair.

79 Scarlett Rd -- Service on St. Clair Avenue

Origin of proposal: Councillors Nunziata and Saundercook
City wards: York Humber
Time periods: Monday to Friday, peak periods

It is recommended that the 79 SCARLETT RD route be changed during the peak periods from Monday to Friday to provide service on St. Clair Avenue, between Runnymede Road and Scarlett Road. This change would reduce the distance that customers in the area need to walk to reach their nearest bus stop, and would bring transit service closer to the newly-relocated Daniel Leather manufacturing and retail facility.

Buses on the 79 SCARLETT RD route now operate in both directions via Runnymede Road, Henrietta Street, Castleton Avenue, Prichard Avenue, Jane Street, Foxwell Street, and Scarlett Road. With this change, every second northbound bus during the morning peak period would be changed to operate via Runnymede Road, St. Clair Avenue, and Scarlett Road, instead of over the present route. The change would be made with no additional operating costs, as the proposed routing can be covered in the same time as the present route.

The change would bring service closer to customers who begin or end their trip near St. Clair Avenue, and would reduce their walking distance to or from the nearest bus stop. Approximately 255 customer-trips would be made each day on the new section of the route. The change would make service worse for customers who now use the stops on Runnymede Road, Henrietta Street, Castleton Avenue, Prichard Avenue, Jane Street, Foxwell Street and Scarlet Road, as northbound service in the morning peak period and southbound service in the afternoon peak period would be reduced. Approximately 240 customer-trips each day would be made with a longer waiting time.

The change in weighted travel time shows that the benefit of a shorter walk to the nearest stop is more important to customers than the inconvenience of longer waiting time. This change would be an overall improvement of service for customers, and it is therefore recommended.

TTC staff also examined changing the 79 SCARLETT RD route so that it would serve St. Clair Avenue also in the midday and evening from Monday to Friday. At these times, the change in weighted travel time shows that the inconvenience of additional waiting time is more important to customers than the benefit of a shorter walk. A change to the route in the midday and in the evening would cause an overall inconvenience to customers and for that reason was not recommended.

Status of Proposal: implemented as proposed on February 13, 2000.

Additional periods of service on present routes.

37A ISLINGTON - Sunday and holiday evening service on Rexdale Boulevard

Origin of proposal: Councillor Brown
City ward: Rexdale-Thistletown
Time periods: Sunday and holiday evenings

It is recommended that new service on the 37A ISLINGTON (Islington Stn-Humberwood via Rexdale and Woodbine Centre) branch be provided during the evening on Sundays and holidays. The change would improve service by reducing the distance that customers in the area need to walk to their nearest bus stop.

At present, service on the 37A ISLINGTON branch operates from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., Monday to Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sundays. With this change, service on Sundays and holidays would operate until 1:00 a.m. The new service during the evening on Sundays and holidays would operate every 30 minutes. In addition to serving Woodbine Centre shopping mall and areas along Rexdale Boulevard and Humberwood Boulevard, this route provides direct service between Islington Station and Woodbine Racetrack. The racetrack is expanding their operations this fall, by adding additional gambling facilities, and the projection of ridership on this service includes the effects of increased activity at the racetrack.

It is projected that approximately 280 customer-trips would be made on the new service during the evening on Sundays and holidays. Approximately 200 of these trips would be new to the TTC, and the remainder of these trips would be made by customers who are now using other services but would choose to use the 37A ISLINGTON route in preference to their current service.

Three buses would be required to provide this service, and so a financial assessment was carried out. The comparison of the operating costs with the projected increase in ridership indicates that the service would meet the TTC's financial standards, and it is therefore recommended.

The cost to operate this service would be taken from the savings in operating resources on the routes which had poor financial performance, and described in Section 3 of this report. By re-allocating operating resources from other routes with poor financial performance to this service, more customers will be attracted to the TTC, the TTC's productivity will be increased , and the TTC's fare revenue will be increased, without an increase in the total cost of operations.

109 RANEE -- Saturday late evening service

Origin of proposal: Councillor Mihevc
City ward: York Eglinton, North York Spadina
Time periods: Saturday late evening

It is recommended that new service on the 109 RANEE route be provided during the late evening on Saturdays. The change would improve service by reducing the distance that customers in the area need to walk to their nearest bus stop.

At present, service on the 109 RANEE route operates from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., Monday to Friday, from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sundays. With this change, service on Saturdays would operate until approximately 12:30 a.m. The new service in the evening on Saturdays would operate every 45 minutes.

It is projected that approximately 90 customer-trips would be made on the new service during the late evening on Saturdays. Approximately 20 of these trips would be new to the TTC, and the remainder of these trips would be made by customers who are now using other services but would choose to use the 109 RANEE route in preference to their current service.

One bus would be required to provide this service, and so a financial assessment was carried out. The comparison of the operating costs with the projected increase in ridership indicates that the service would meet the TTC's financial standards and is therefore recommended.

The cost to operate this service would be taken from the savings in operating resources on the routes which had poor financial performance, and described in Section 3 of this report. By re-allocating operating resources from other routes with poor financial performance to this service, more customers will be attracted to the TTC, the TTC's productivity will be increased, and the TTC's fare revenue will be increased, without an increase in the total cost of operations.

TTC staff also examined whether service on the 109 RANEE route should be provided also during the late evening on Sundays and holidays. Service at this time would not have met the TTC's financial standards, and so it was not recommended.

112 WEST MALL -- Monday to Friday evening service to Disco Road

Origin of proposal: TTC staff
City ward: Rexdale-Thistletown
Time periods: Monday to Friday early evening

It is recommended that new service to Disco Road be provided during the early evening from Monday to Friday on the 112 WEST MALL route. The change would improve service by reducing the distance that customers in the area need to walk to their nearest bus stop.

At present, service to Disco Road on the 112 WEST MALL route operates only during the peak periods and midday from Monday to Friday. With this change, service to Disco Road would operate from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. The new evening service would operate approximately every 30 minutes.

It is projected that approximately 90 customer-trips would be made on the new service during the early evening. Approximately 45 of these trips would be new to the TTC, and the remainder of these trips would be made by customers who are now using other nearby services but would choose to use the 112 WEST MALL route in preference to their current service.

One bus would be required to provide this service, and so a financial assessment was carried out. The comparison of the operating costs with the projected increase in ridership indicates that the service would meet the TTC's financial standards, and it is therefore recommended.

The cost to operate this service would be taken from the savings in operating resources on the routes which had poor financial performance, and described in Section 3 of this report. By re-allocating operating resources from other routes with poor financial performance to this service, more customers will be attracted to the TTC, the TTC's productivity will be increased, and the TTC's fare revenue will be increased, without an increase in the total cost of operations.

TTC staff examined whether service to Disco Road should be provided also during the late evening. Service at this time would not have met the TTC's financial standards, and so it was not recommended.

Along with these proposals, the following changes occurred throughout 2000:

February 13, 2000

  • Yonge-University-Spadina Subway - Service increase
Service was increased at most times of the week, to give extra capacity to carry customers during the peak periods, and to ensure that scheduled service is no less frequent than every five minutes at all times. During the peak periods from Monday to Friday, three trains will be added. The headway will be improved from 2 min 38 s to 2 min 29 s in the morning peak period and from 2 min 42 s to 2 min 32 s in the afternoon peak period. During the midday from Monday to Friday, one train will be added, and the headway will be improved from 4 min 12 s to 4 min 04 s. During the evening and on Sundays, up to four trains will be added, so that the headway is no wider than 5 min 00 s at any time.
  • 15 EVANS - School trip adjustment
A school trip that used to depart from Sherway Gardens at 2:53 p.m. serving Father John Redmond Secondary School, then operating along Evans Avenue and north on Royal York Road, was changed so that the bus operates east on Evans Avenue and south on Royal York Road to Lake Shore Boulevard. Queensway Division staff report that the majority of customers on this trip now transfer to travel south on Royal York Road, and changing this trip to operate south will reduce the need for customers to transfer. The destination sign will read: 15S EVANS / SHORT TURN / TO ROYAL YORK / and LAKE SHORE.
  • 36 FINCH WEST - Destination sign change
The destination sign display for westbound buses on the 36D branch was changed to include mention of Weston Road. Arrow Road Division staff found that some customers are reluctant to board 36D buses because they are unsure if the bus stops at Weston Road. The sign will read: 36D FINCH WEST / TO WESTON RD / and MILVAN.
  • 51 LESLIE - Accessible service and service increase
This route was designated as an accessible route, operated with New Flyer D40LF buses in the 7300-series, based at Eglinton Garage. Every run on this route was scheduled to use the D40LF buses, but some individual trips, such as school trips, may continue to use standard 40-foot buses. Service on this route was increased during the midday from Monday to Friday, to compensate for the smaller capacity of the D40LF buses. One bus was added, and the headway improved from 30 minutes to 20 minutes.
  • 116E MORNINGSIDE EXPRESS - Destination sign change
The destination signs was changed for eastbound trips which end at the University of Toronto's campus at Ellesmere Road and Military Trail. This campus was previously named Scarborough College, but is now known as the University of Toronto at Scarborough, and abbreviated by the university as U of T Scarborough. The signs now read: 116E MORNINGSIDE / U of T SCARBOROUGH / and CONLINS RD / EXPRESS.
  • 63 OSSINGTON and 94 WELLESLEY - Route change
These routes were changed after 11:00 p.m. each day to not run on Northumberland Street. Buses now enter and leave the station by using Bloor Street and Concord Avenue, instead of Northumberland Street and Concord Avenue. There was no change to the scheduled round-trip time, headways, departure times from the station, or bus bay assignments.
  • 512 ST CLAIR - Route change
When running back to Roncesvalles Carhouse, all streetcars now operate through Bathurst Station, picking up customers at the 511 BATHURST southbound platform. These cars then continue south on Bathurst Street, and west on King Street to the carhouse. This change increases service on the 511 BATHURST route at very little additional cost, and makes the southbound routing consistent with the northbound routing, which has always operated through the station.
  • 88 SOUTH LEASIDE - Accessible service and service increase
This route was designated as an accessible route, operated with New Flyer D40LF buses in the 7300-series, based at Eglinton Garage. Every run on this route is scheduled to use the D40LF buses, but some individual trips, such as school trips, may continue to use standard 40-foot buses. Service on this route has been increased during the midday from Monday to Friday, to compensate for the smaller capacity of the D40LF buses. One bus has been added, and the headway will be improved from 20 minutes to 13 minutes.
  • 96 WILSON - Destination sign change
The destination sign display for westbound buses on the 96G (York Mills Stn-Clayson) branch has changed to include mention of Jane Street. With the old sign, some customers are reluctant to board 96G buses because they are unsure if the bus goes as far as Jane Street. The revised sign reads: 96G WILSON / TO JANE / and CLAYSON.
  • 95 YORK MILLS - Destination sign changes
The destination signs have been changed for eastbound trips which end at or divert to the University of Toronto's campus at Ellesmere Road and Military Trail. This campus was previously named Scarborough College, but is now known as the University of Toronto at Scarborough, and abbreviated by the university as U of T Scarborough. The signs now read: 95C YORK MILLS / TO KINGSTON RD / VIA U of T SCARBOROUGH and 95 YORK MILLS / TO YORK MILLS STN / VIA U of T SCARBOROUGH.
  • Service increases to increase capacity on busy routes
Service has been increased on a number of routes in the February board period, to give more room for increasing ridership levels on busy routes in the system. Routes with service increases include: 511 BATHURST (Saturday early evening), 6 BAY (Monday to Friday morning peak period and early evening), 9 BELLAMY (Monday to Friday afternoon peak period), 17 BIRCHMOUNT (Monday to Friday afternoon peak period), 35 JANE (Monday to Friday early morning), 43 KENNEDY (Sunday and holiday afternoon), 116 MORNINGSIDE (Monday to Friday afternoon peak period), 171 PROGRESS EAST (Monday to Friday morning peak period), 501 QUEEN (Saturday daytime and early evening), 510 SPADINA (Saturday early evening), 85 SHEPPARD EAST (Monday to Friday evening) and 95 YORK MILLS (Sunday and holiday daytime).

March 19, 2000

  • Bloor-Danforth Subway - Service increase
Service will be increased at most times of the week, to give extra capacity to carry customers during the peak periods, and to ensure that scheduled service is no less frequent than every five minutes at all times. During the peak periods from Monday to Friday, two trains will be added. The headway will be improved from 2 min 35 s to 2 min 27 s in the morning peak period and from 2 min 47 s to 2 min 38 s in the afternoon peak period. During the midday from Monday to Friday, three trains will be added, and the headway will be improved from 5 min 37 s to 4 min 43 s. During the daytime on Saturdays, two trains will be added, and the headway will be improved from 5 min 19 s to 4 min 43 s. During the evening from Monday to Saturday and all day on Sundays, three trains will be added, so that the headway is no wider than 5 min 00 s at any time.
  • 511 BATHURST - Streetcar track reconstruction
Streetcar service on this route will be replaced by buses for the March board period, because of track construction for the new Queens Quay Streetcar Connection at the Bathurst/Fleet/Lake Shore intersection. The buses will be scheduled to operate over the regular route, but will be diverted for part of the board period, at the divisional level, at times when the roadway is closed. Recovery time will be scheduled at all times at Exhibition Loop, in order to allow time for the buses to divert. Thirteen buses will replace seven ALRVs in the morning peak period, and 14 buses will replace seven ALRVs in the afternoon peak period. The buses will run from Danforth, Eglinton, and Queensway Garages, with Roncesvalles and Russell Division operators.
  • 41 KEELE - Route change
Service will be changed in the early evening from Monday to Friday, to eliminate the 41A (Keele Stn-Sheppard) short turn branch. With this change, all buses on the route will operate to York University, and overall travel time for customers will be reduced. The headway south of Sheppard Avenue will be increased from 12 min 30 s to 15 min.
  • 54E LAWRENCE EAST EXPRESS - Change to express stopping pattern
