While not an official farewell charter, it was generally recognized that this would be one of the last opportunities to charter an Orion V bus, as the model was nearing the end of its service life, and a number of 7039’s compatriots were heading towards retirement. So, this charter was an opportunity for many to say goodbye to an old friend.
Here are some shots from the day.

Transit fans gathered on Sheppard Avenue, outside the main entrance to Don Mills station as TTC Orion V bus #7039 approached for its 10:00 a.m. departure. Photo by James Bow.

The first stop after departing Don Mills station was Fenelon loop, the former eastern end of the 122 GRAYDON HALL route. While it isn't used as often now that the bus route has been extended east, a stop is in place for special trips picking up students from the nearby school. Photo by James Bow.

After Fenelon Loop, the charter wound its way through the streets of east North York and northwestern Scarborough until it came to Pharmacy and Pennyworth, at the north end of the 67 PHARMACY route. Photo by James Bow.

Heading back west, Orion V bus #7039 stopped at the Donway East, just north of Lawrence, for a photo shoot mimicking the 162 LAWRENCE-DONWAY route. Photo by James Bow.

After stopping at Vanderhoof, Orion V bus #7039 headed south, before finally pausing on Thorncliffe Park Drive just north of Overlea Boulevard where people got out for a lunch break. Photo by James Bow.

Returning from lunch, charter attendees were treated to a little show as the flip-dot display was used to show some destination exposures not shown on this charter. Seen here, 47B LANSDOWNE, 129A McCOWAN NORTH, 68 WARDEN and 86A SCARBOROUGH. Photo by James Bow.

More shots of flip-dot destinations, including 302 DANFORTH-McCOWAN, 193 EXHIBITION ROCKET, and one that was particularly interesting to charter attendees: 199A FINCH ROCKET (to York University via Finch Station). Hmm... a Seneca-York Rocket, perhaps? Photo by James Bow.

After leaving Thorncliffe Park, TTC Orion V bus #7039 pauses at Ferris Drive, showing a 23 DAWES exposure, and bringing out a number of residents wondering what all the fuss was about. Photo by James Bow.

Finally, after heading south on Don Mills, Orion V bus #7039 turned left on Sheppard Avenue and pulled up to the entrance of Don Mills station and the end of the charter. There was time for some more photos and some goodbyes. Many thanks to the Toronto Transportation Society and the organizers of this charter for their hard work putting together what became a very successful weekend. Photo by James Bow.
