Service begins on a new express route. Buses run over the same route as the 137 PREMIUM EXPRESS that was withdrawn the previous September. The route was renamed and renumbered as part of a planned reorganization of premium express routes into the 140 series of route numbers.
Unlike the earlier service, there are only three southbound trips on the 140 DOWNTOWN EXPRESS VIA SHERBOURNE route. Buses start operating at Glen Road and Highland and follow the 82 ROSEDALE looping, before operating express via Sherbourne and Richmond, dropping passengers off on Richmond at Church, Yonge, Bay and York.
Along with the 141 DOWNTOWN EXPRESS VIA MOUNT PLEASANT and 142 DOWNTOWN EXPRESS VIA AVENUE ROAD, which were introduced on April 2, 1990, this is another effort to relieve overcrowding on the Yonge Subway and offer a direct ride to the downtown core.
